We are looking for an experienced Head - Purchase (API & Formulation) to lead strategic procurement across R&D and plant operations. The role will be responsible for developing sourcing strategies, managing key suppliers, driving commercial efficiency, and ensuring the timely availability of materials while maintaining high standards of quality, compliance, and cost control.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in procurement, purchase, supply chain, supplier management, and strategic sourcing, preferably within pharmaceutical, API, formulation, or other regulated manufacturing environments.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

• Lead direct procurement and purchasing activities for R&D and plant operations.
• Develop and execute strategic sourcing plans for APIs, formulations, raw materials, and other relevant procurement categories.
• Identify, evaluate, onboard, and develop reliable suppliers based on cost, quality, capability, and delivery performance.
• Lead commercial negotiations covering pricing, payment terms, contracts, lead times, quality requirements, and supply commitments.
• Manage strategic supplier relationships and ensure consistent supplier performance.
• Oversee procurement contracts, budgets, purchase planning, and commercial compliance.
• Drive cost optimisation, savings initiatives, process improvements, and procurement efficiency.
• Monitor market trends, commodity movements, supplier capacity, and procurement risks to support informed sourcing decisions.
• Develop mitigation strategies for supply, pricing, quality, and vendor-related risks.
• Collaborate closely with R&D, Plant Operations, Quality, Finance, Supply Chain, and other stakeholders to align procurement with business requirements.
• Ensure timely availability of materials to support research, production, and operational requirements.
• Establish and strengthen procurement processes, policies, controls, and governance standards.
• Analyse procurement data and supplier performance to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Lead, mentor, and develop the procurement team while establishing clear performance standards.
• Support supplier audits, compliance requirements, and resolution of procurement-related issues.
• Maintain strong documentation and reporting around sourcing, contracts, supplier performance, budgets, and savings.
• Continuously evaluate new suppliers, sourcing opportunities, and procurement technologies to improve efficiency and resilience.

What Makes You a Great Fit

• 16+ years of experience in procurement, purchase, strategic sourcing, supply chain, or a related leadership function.
• Proven experience leading procurement/purchase functions with responsibility for strategic sourcing and supplier management.
• Strong experience in R&D and plant procurement, preferably within pharmaceutical, API, formulation, chemical, or another regulated manufacturing environment.
• Strong expertise in supplier identification, evaluation, development, performance management, and relationship management.
• Excellent negotiation and contract management skills with a strong commercial orientation.
• Demonstrated experience driving cost savings, procurement efficiencies, process improvements, and supplier optimisation.
• Strong understanding of procurement planning, budgets, supply continuity, and supplier risk management.
• Strong analytical and financial skills with the ability to evaluate commercial proposals and sourcing decisions.
• Excellent stakeholder-management and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across R&D, Plant, Quality, Finance, and Supply Chain functions.
• Proven leadership experience with the ability to manage, mentor, and develop procurement teams.
• Strong understanding of procurement compliance, governance, documentation, and operational controls.
• Ability to analyse market trends and proactively identify procurement opportunities and risks.
• Graduate or postgraduate qualification in Engineering, Business, Supply Chain, Procurement, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Strong problem-solving, decision-making, organisational, and execution capabilities.
• Ability to operate effectively in a complex, fast-paced, and regulated business environment.
