The Role

Hybrid Working Requirement: Candidates should be flexible to attend our Marousi, Athens office 3 times per week. Please note that travel or commuting expenses will not be covered for candidates residing outside Attiki or outside a reasonable commuting distance.

This is an individual contributor role, and the successful candidate will not have direct people-management responsibilities.

XTM is looking for an AI Language Scientist to shape how we build and apply artificial intelligence across our translation and localization ecosystem.

This is a high-impact role for an AI expert who wants to operate at the intersection of deep technical research, product roadmap, and hands-on engineering. You will be XTM’s core technical authority on AI-helping us identify genuinely useful capabilities, avoid hype, and build high-value, production-ready features for our global enterprise customers.

Primary Responsibilities

1. AI in Language Technology (Core Focus)

• Explore how advances in AI disrupt and enhance traditional translation, terminology, localization, and multilingual content workflows.
• Identify high-value opportunities where LLMs, RAG, and custom models directly improve automated translation quality, workflow automation, and enterprise localization tools.
• Leverage XTM's existing localization expertise and proprietary data to create unique competitive differentiation.

2. AI Research & Innovation

• Stay at the forefront of AI/ML developments (LLMs, multimodal AI, agentic systems, vector embeddings, fine-tuning).
• Design and execute prototypes, experiments, and proof-of-concepts to validate new capabilities before handing off to product.
• Establish rigorous metrics for model evaluation, quality, reliability, accuracy, latency, and cost.

3. Product & Engineering Collaboration

• Work closely with Product and Engineering teams to turn successful experiments into production-ready capabilities.
• Partner with engineers to move prototypes to scalable implementations and define technical requirements for AI-powered features.
• Write clean Python code and contribute hands-on technical implementations where appropriate.

4. AI Strategy & Technical Direction

• Partner with Product, Engineering, and executive leadership to define XTM’s AI vision and technical roadmap.
• Conduct build-vs-buy evaluations across models, platforms, frameworks, and AI infrastructure.
• Set internal standards for experimentation, evaluation, responsible AI, and production readiness.

5. Industry Voice & Community Engagement (Secondary Focus)

• Serve as an external voice for XTM by writing occasional research-led articles, presenting at key industry events, or engaging with academic and open-source AI communities. (Note: Primary focus remains internal research and product execution).

Requirements

Essential

• 5+ years of professional experience in AI, Machine Learning, NLP, Generative AI, or a closely related field.
• Domain Expertise: Proven experience in NLP, translation technology, computational linguistics, or working with large multilingual datasets.
• Hands-on LLM Experience: Demonstrated success building with LLMs, modern ML frameworks, transformers, RAG, vector search, and model fine-tuning.
• Engineering Skills: Strong Python skills and the ability to build functional prototypes and write production-grade code alongside engineering teams.
• Pragmatic Evaluation: Proven ability to critically evaluate emerging tech against real-world metrics (accuracy, latency, cost) rather than adopting trends.
• Communication: Exceptional ability to explain complex AI concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Highly Desirable

• Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Computer Science, AI, NLP, or computational linguistics.
• Experience with agentic AI workflows, tool-using LLMs, and AI observability frameworks.
• Prior experience in enterprise B2B SaaS environments.
• Published research, patents, or active open-source contributions.

What Success Looks Like (First 12 Months)

• Quarter 1: Established an audit of XTM’s AI capabilities and built a streamlined framework for evaluating emerging models.
• Quarter 2: Delivered initial prototypes that successfully validate new AI-driven language features for the product roadmap.
• Quarter 3: Partnered with engineering to deploy a key AI capability into production.
• Quarter 4: Established XTM’s go-forward AI technical roadmap and served as a recognized internal authority across all product lines.
