Overview
Illumina is an American company founded in 1998 whose sequencing machines drove the cost of reading a human genome from hundreds of millions of dollars to a few hundred, and it holds the dominant share of the market it largely created. Its business is a classic instruments and consumables model: sequencers are sold once and then consume proprietary reagent kits for years, which is where most of the profit sits. Headquartered in San Diego and listed on Nasdaq, it spent years entangled in the forced divestiture of the cancer test maker Grail and now faces genuine competition from Chinese and startup sequencing platforms for the first time.
