Overview
Kakao is a South Korean internet company whose listed entity traces back to Daum Communications, founded in 1995, and which took its present form when Daum merged with the messaging startup Kakao in 2014. KakaoTalk, launched in 2010, is used by almost the entire South Korean population and functions as the country's default communication layer, carrying payments, shopping, gifting and content on top of messaging. Around it the group has built Kakao Pay, Kakao Bank, the Kakao T mobility app, Kakao Entertainment for webtoons and music, and the Kanana family of AI assistants.
