Macquarie Group is an Australian financial services company founded in 1969 as the local arm of the British merchant bank Hill Samuel, which became independent and took its present name in 1985. It is best known for effectively inventing modern infrastructure investing, buying and managing airports, toll roads, utilities and energy assets on behalf of institutional investors, a model widely copied and sometimes criticised. Asset management is now its largest division, alongside advisory and principal investment through Macquarie Capital, commodities and markets trading, and a domestic Australian retail bank, and it has become one of the world's largest investors in renewable energy.
