Overview
Red Hat is an American open source software company founded in 1993 that proved enterprises would pay for support, certification and long-term maintenance of software they could otherwise download for free. Its portfolio centres on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the OpenShift Kubernetes platform, Ansible automation and middleware, all sold as subscriptions rather than licences. Acquired by IBM in 2019 for thirty-four billion dollars and run as a separate unit, it remains the reference point for how open source software is commercialised at enterprise scale.
