Overview

The Securities and Exchange Commission is the United States federal agency created in 1934 to regulate securities markets after the crash of 1929 and the legislation that followed it. It reviews corporate disclosure, writes and enforces the rules governing exchanges, brokers, investment advisers and funds, brings civil enforcement actions against fraud and market abuse, and operates the EDGAR system through which every public company files its reports. Headquartered in Washington with regional offices across the country, it employs several thousand lawyers, accountants, economists and technologists.
