Overview
Upstage is a South Korean artificial intelligence company founded in 2020 by former research leaders from Naver, Kakao and Apple, focused on building compact models that outperform far larger systems. Its Solar family of language models drew international attention by topping open leaderboards at a fraction of the parameter count of its competitors, using a depth-scaling technique the team developed and published. The company pairs those models with Document AI for extracting structured data from complex business documents, and sells to Korean enterprises and public bodies that need strong Korean performance under strict data residency requirements.
