AECOM is an American infrastructure consulting firm that became independent in 1990 through a management buyout from the energy group Ashland, and is now one of the largest design and engineering organisations in the world. It plans, designs and manages delivery of transport systems, water and wastewater infrastructure, buildings, environmental remediation and energy projects for public agencies and private developers across roughly one hundred and fifty countries. Headquartered in Dallas after relocating from Los Angeles, the company sold its self-perform construction and government services arms to concentrate on higher-margin professional services rather than carrying construction risk.

Team Lead - Renewable Energy / Solar Farms

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Team Lead with a strong background in renewable energy systems, solar PV, BESS, and medium voltage (MV) grid connections to lead our growing renewable energy engineering team.

The ideal candidate combines proven technical expertise in solar power system design, MV/HV network integration, and grid compliance with strong people leadership, team development, and project delivery skills. You will be responsible for guiding engineers, ensuring design quality, coordinating resources, and supporting the successful delivery of renewable projects. Proficiency in AutoCAD, PVsyst, and advanced electrical design tools is a strong advantage.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior professional who thrives in multidisciplinary renewable projects and is passionate about building high-performing teams while delivering efficient, reliable, and sustainable electrical engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

1. Team Leadership & Technical Direction

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of electrical engineers working on utility-scale solar PV, BESS, and hybrid renewable projects, including MV distribution up to 66kV.
  • Set technical direction, review designs, approve deliverables, and ensure consistent engineering quality across the team.
  • Ensure designs comply with IEC, IEEE, ENA, DNO/TSO requirements, and national grid connection codes.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, performance development, and career progression for team members.
  • Promote a collaborative, safety-focused, and technically excellent working culture.

2. Solar & Battery Systems Expertise

  • Oversee the design and integration of solar PV arrays, inverters, transformers, RMUs, and BESS systems into existing grid networks.
  • Review and challenge PV yield, losses, equipment selection, protection, and grounding designs using simulation tools such as PVsyst, ETAP, and similar software.
  • Ensure safe design practices, including protection coordination, earthing, and arc flash mitigation.
  • Advise clients and internal teams on renewable connection strategies, grid code compliance, and interconnection requirements.
  • Lead technical coordination meetings, resolve design interfaces, and ensure effective integration with civil, structural, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Support digital workflows using CDE platforms (BIM 360, ACC, Aconex) and model-based collaboration for efficient project delivery.

3. Project, Resource & Client Management

  • Act as the technical and team lead for electrical engineering scopes on large renewable projects.
  • Allocate resources, plan workloads, monitor progress, and support project managers with budgets, schedules, risks, and deliverable management.
  • Coordinate with developers, EPC contractors, utilities, and independent engineers during project development and execution.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, feasibility reports, proposals, and client design reviews.
  • Represent the team in client meetings, technical reviews, and bid activities.

4. Construction, Commissioning & Knowledge Sharing

  • Provide engineering oversight and support during construction and commissioning stages.
  • Review contractor documentation, guide responses to RFIs, and verify electrical installations and testing procedures.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, sharing knowledge of renewable design, grid connection, and installation practices.
  • Identify lessons learned and drive continuous improvement in tools, standards, templates, and delivery processes.

Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field).
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical design for renewable energy or utility-scale power projects.
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams, managing resources, and delivering projects on time and to quality standards.
  • Proven track record in solar PV, MV distribution, substations, and grid connection design.
  • Hands-on understanding of utility standards, protection schemes, grounding, and electrical safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, electrical design tools, and BIM workflows.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred:

  • Experience with PVsyst, ETAP, Revit, or similar analysis tools.
  • Field experience in solar/BESS installation, commissioning, or operations.
  • Exposure to energy storage systems, hybrid microgrids, and HV grid interconnections.
  • Familiarity with international renewable standards (IEC, ENA, G99/G100) and interconnection processes.
  • Experience supporting bids, feasibility studies, technical due diligence, or owner’s engineer scopes.
  • Proven ability to mentor engineers, delegate effectively, and build a culture of technical excellence.

At AECOM, we are committed to maintaining a secure and trustworthy recruitment process and take any fraudulent hiring activity seriously. To support this commitment, all newly hired employees are required to attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment.
