AECOM is an American infrastructure consulting firm that became independent in 1990 through a management buyout from the energy group Ashland, and is now one of the largest design and engineering organisations in the world. It plans, designs and manages delivery of transport systems, water and wastewater infrastructure, buildings, environmental remediation and energy projects for public agencies and private developers across roughly one hundred and fifty countries. Headquartered in Dallas after relocating from Los Angeles, the company sold its self-perform construction and government services arms to concentrate on higher-margin professional services rather than carrying construction risk.

AECOM is seeking a highly motivated Digital Infrastructure / Telecommunications Engineering Intern to support our growing Technology Solutions and Digital Infrastructure practice.

This internship is designed for a student pursuing a degree in Construction Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline who is interested in developing a career supporting telecommunications and digital infrastructure projects.

The intern will work alongside experienced engineers, designers, project managers, and technical specialists supporting the planning, design, coordination, and delivery of telecommunications infrastructure. The position will provide hands-on exposure to fiber optic networks, outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) telecommunications systems, underground infrastructure, data center connectivity, and large-scale infrastructure programs.

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to build practical engineering and project delivery skills by working directly with project drawings, specifications, quantity takeoffs, design documentation, and multidisciplinary project teams.

The responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the planning and design of fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Support development and review of OSP and ISP telecommunications designs.
  • Assist with underground conduit, duct bank, handhole, manhole, vault, and fiber route layouts.
  • Review engineering drawings, construction documents, specifications, and other technical information.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and assist with development of project estimates.
  • Assist with evaluation of proposed fiber routes and telecommunications pathways.
  • Help identify potential utility conflicts, constructability concerns, and coordination issues.
  • Support preparation and quality review of drawings, calculations, reports, and other project deliverables.
  • Assist project managers and technical leads with document organization, project tracking, and technical coordination.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary coordination with civil, electrical, structural, GIS, BIM, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Gain exposure to CAD, GIS, BIM, and other digital design and project delivery tools used on infrastructure projects.
  • Assist with research and application of telecommunications design criteria, client standards, and project requirements.
  • Participate in internal design reviews and quality-control activities.
  • Support project teams on data center, fiber network, utility, transportation, and other digital infrastructure assignments.
  • Perform additional technical and project support activities as assigned while developing increasing responsibility throughout the internship.

This internship is intended to provide progressive, hands-on experience rather than observation alone. The intern will have the opportunity to develop skills in:

  • Fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure
  • OSP and ISP design
  • Underground conduit and utility infrastructure
  • Engineering drawing and specification review
  • Quantity takeoffs and estimating
  • Constructability and design review
  • CAD, GIS, BIM, and digital delivery workflows
  • Quality assurance and quality control
  • Multidisciplinary engineering coordination
  • Project management and project delivery

Minimum Requirements:

  • Candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related field and must have completed at least 3 years of study. Candidates who have recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the Master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous internship or work experience involving construction estimating, quantity takeoffs, engineering, construction management, or telecommunications.
  • Experience reviewing construction plans, drawings, or specifications.
  • Exposure to telecommunications or fiber optic infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, GIS, Bluebeam, or similar engineering/design software.
  • Experience preparing quantity takeoffs or construction cost estimates.
  • Interest in fiber optic networks, outside plant infrastructure, data centers, utility infrastructure, and digital infrastructure.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and an interest in understanding how infrastructure is designed and constructed.
  • Basic understanding of engineering and construction drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to review technical documentation.
  • Ability to organize information and manage multiple assignments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in infrastructure, construction, engineering, or telecommunications.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technical software, design standards, and engineering processes.
  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
  • Sponsorship for US employment authorization is not available now or in the future for this position.
  • This position requires a hybrid work schedule which includes in office work in Philadelphia, PA. The selected candidate must be available to work in Philadelphia on a scheduled basis.
