AECOM is an American infrastructure consulting firm that became independent in 1990 through a management buyout from the energy group Ashland, and is now one of the largest design and engineering organisations in the world. It plans, designs and manages delivery of transport systems, water and wastewater infrastructure, buildings, environmental remediation and energy projects for public agencies and private developers across roughly one hundred and fifty countries. Headquartered in Dallas after relocating from Los Angeles, the company sold its self-perform construction and government services arms to concentrate on higher-margin professional services rather than carrying construction risk.

Work with Us. Change the World.

At AECOM, we're delivering a better world. Whether improving your commute, keeping the lights on, providing access to clean water, or transforming skylines, our work helps people and communities thrive. We are the world's trusted infrastructure consulting firm, partnering with clients to solve the world’s most complex challenges and build legacies for future generations.

There has never been a better time to be at AECOM. With accelerating infrastructure investment worldwide, our services are in great demand. We invite you to bring your bold ideas and big dreams and become part of a global team of over 50,000 planners, designers, engineers, scientists, digital innovators, program and construction managers and other professionals delivering projects that create a positive and tangible impact around the world.

We're one global team driven by our common purpose to deliver a better world. Join us.

In AECOM’s AI for Engineering team your code will directly shape the physical world around us. We build AI-driven technology that revolutionises how infrastructure and buildings are designed and engineered; reducing waste, cutting CO₂, and making the built environment more efficient and sustainable. This is where software has measurable, real-world impact.

Our AI for Engineering team combines the speed, ownership, and technical ambition of a startup with the scale, resources, and domain expertise of one of the world’s leading engineering firms.

You’ll work on challenging applied machine learning problems spanning optimization, simulation, and real-world engineering systems, building models that move beyond experimentation and into products used to solve tangible infrastructure challenges. These are often complex, ambiguous problems where the solution is not already defined.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design and development of advanced machine learning models that deliver measurable impact across engineering and infrastructure applications.
  • Own the end-to-end modelling lifecycle-from problem formulation and feature strategy through experimentation, validation, deployment, and iteration.
  • Tackle complex, ambiguous problems and translate them into scalable ML solutions.
  • Design robust experimentation frameworks and evaluation methodologies that measure real-world model performance.
  • Diagnose model failure modes, evaluate performance trade-offs, and continuously improve models after deployment.
  • Collaborate closely with MLOps and software engineering teams to productionize models while maintaining a strong focus on modelling quality and performance.
  • Partner with product managers, engineers, and domain experts to embed AI capabilities into our SaaS platform.
  • Provide technical leadership across ML initiatives, mentoring other engineers and helping shape modelling approaches, experimentation standards, and technical direction.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Proven experience developing and deploying ML models in production settings
  • Master’s or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Operations Research, or a related field
  • Strong expertise in Python and modern ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn)
  • Demonstrated depth in model design, optimization, and evaluation beyond standard off-the-shelf approaches
  • Strong intuition for model failure modes, generalization, and real-world performance trade-offs
  • Experience owning machine learning initiatives end-to-end, from problem definition through deployment and iteration.
  • Proven ability to independently scope, execute, and deliver high-impact ML initiatives
  • Clear communicator who can explain complex modelling decisions and trade-offs to diverse stakeholders

Preferred Skills

  • Experience applying machine learning to engineering-heavy or physical-world domains such as mechanical engineering, construction, transportation, HVAC, energy systems, or robotics.
  • Background in optimisation, simulation, scientific machine learning, physics-informed learning, or digital twins
  • Experience with time-series forecasting, computer vision, sensor data, or other complex engineering datasets.
  • Track record of mentoring or technically leading ML initiatives.

Our Hiring Process

  • 25-minute screening call
  • Take-home challenge: A hands-on task to assess your problem-solving and technical skills
  • Combined technical and cultural interview
    • Whiteboard Interview: 1-hour with 2 of our engineers to discuss your solution to the take-home challenge
    • Culture fit: 30-minute meeting with our leadership team

Why Join Us?

  • Work on real-world problems where AI creates measurable impact.
  • Be part of a team where your work matters, and your ideas become real.
  • Collaborate with sharp, driven colleagues in a culture of trust, ownership, and high standards.
  • Contribute to making the built environment smarter and more sustainable.

At AECOM, we are committed to maintaining a secure and trustworthy recruitment process and take any fraudulent hiring activity seriously. To support this commitment, all newly hired employees are required to attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment.
