AlphaGov is seeking a Senior Public Sector Compensation & Classification Consultant to lead and support compensation, classification, and pay-plan studies for municipal, county, utility, school, and other public-sector clients.
You will provide technical leadership on job classification, market compensation analysis, internal equity, FLSA compliance, salary structures, and implementation recommendations. Ideal candidates have completed compensation and classification studies for cities, counties, public utilities, or comparable government agencies.
This is a project-based consulting role supporting current and future AlphaGov public-sector engagements.
What you'll do:
- Lead compensation and classification studies for public-sector organizations
- Review job descriptions, org structures, and employee questionnaires; conduct interviews as needed
- Evaluate positions and develop job families, classifications, grades, and career structures
- Conduct public-sector market surveys and peer comparisons
- Analyze competitiveness, internal equity, compression, and pay relationships
- Develop salary schedules, ranges, and implementation options
- Review FLSA exempt/nonexempt classifications
- Prepare fiscal-impact and phased implementation scenarios
- Present findings to executives, boards, elected officials, and employees
- Contribute technical content to AlphaGov proposals, scopes, and work plans
- Document methodologies and recommendations clearly and defensibly
Requirements
- Required:
- - 7+ years compensation, classification, or HR consulting experience
- - Direct experience completing compensation and classification studies for municipalities, counties, public utilities, or other government entities
- - Experience developing public-sector pay plans and salary structures
- - Strong FLSA knowledge
- - Experience with job analysis, market surveys, internal equity, and compression analysis
- - Strong writing, presentation, and stakeholder facilitation skills
- - Advanced Excel or comparable tools
Nice to have:
- CCP, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or similar
- Experience presenting at public meetings or to elected officials
- Utility / special-district study experience
- Public-sector collective bargaining familiarity
