AMD

AMD is an American semiconductor company founded in 1969 and headquartered in Santa Clara, California, that designs processors, graphics chips and adaptive computing hardware without owning fabrication plants. Its Ryzen and Threadripper processors and Radeon graphics serve consumers and creators, EPYC server chips have taken a large share of the data centre market from Intel, and the Instinct accelerators compete for AI training and inference workloads. The 2022 acquisition of Xilinx added field-programmable gate arrays and adaptive systems on chip, and the company also supplies the custom silicon inside the PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

THE ROLE:

AMD’s Cores Organization delivers industry-leading CPUs, Caches, and Chiplets that are the foundation of AMD’s server, client, and gaming business. We are looking for an experienced Director of Silicon Design Engineering to provide technical and organizational leadership for advanced CPU/core silicon engineering, with responsibility spanning silicon development, validation, post-silicon execution, debug, infrastructure, and cross-functional engineering coordination. Work closely with RTL, Design Verification, Physical Design, DFT, validation, diagnostics, and other engineering organizations to coordinate technical execution and drive cross-functional decisions. The candidate will join the leadership team based in Fort Collins, CO.

THE PERSON:

The candidate is a proven leader of leaders with a track record of delivering complex, high-performance cache or CPU designs to production silicon on aggressive schedules. They connect pre-silicon design and verification activities with post-silicon execution, ensuring that technical issues, engineering risks, schedules, methodologies, and silicon readiness are understood and driven to closure across multiple engineering disciplines. We are pushing the envelope on every program, so the status quo must be challenged continuously. This environment requires creativity, innovation, sound judgment, and excellent verbal and written communication skills with engineers, architects, partner organizations, and senior executives alike. The candidate is passionate about building high-performing teams: hiring top talent, developing managers and senior technical leaders, and creating a culture of ownership, collaboration, and accountability. Our team delivers critical designs for multiple AMD products and is growing in both capability and size, so the candidate must be able to scale the organization while keeping execution sharp.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical leadership across complex silicon design, validation, debug, and bring-up activities.
  • Drive resolution of cross-functional technical issues spanning RTL, DV, physical design, DFT, diagnostics, and silicon validation.
  • Maintain visibility into silicon readiness, engineering risks, execution dependencies, and issues requiring management attention.
  • Participate in major program and methodology decisions affecting current and future CPU/core development
  • Provide leadership for post-silicon test, diagnostics, debug, and validation strategy.
  • Ensure engineering teams have the infrastructure, test capability, and technical coordination needed to efficiently identify, isolate, and resolve silicon issues.
  • Communicate post-silicon operational status, priorities, risks, and execution needs to senior leadership.
  • Represent silicon engineering priorities in leadership forums.
  • Coordinate technical planning and decision-making across current and future product generations.
  • Balance immediate execution requirements against investments in methodology, automation, infrastructure, and longer-term engineering capability.
  • Evaluate staffing needs against program execution requirements and technical capability gaps.
  • Recruit and retain senior engineering talent for highly specialized silicon engineering roles.
  • Develop technical leadership capacity within the engineering organization.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Extensive experience in CPU, SoC, or advanced semiconductor development.
  • Deep knowledge of silicon design, validation, bring-up, diagnostics, and debug.
  • Demonstrated leadership of multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Experience managing execution across multiple silicon/product generations.
  • Strong knowledge of RTL design, verification, silicon validation, test, and debug methodologies.
  • Track record of developing senior engineers and technical leaders.
  • Experience recruiting highly specialized engineering talent.
  • Ability to communicate complex silicon issues effectively from individual-contributors through executive audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly with executives and to collaborate effectively with a diverse team across disciplines and geographies

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • BS/MS/PhD in EE, CS, CSE (or similar), plus multiple years hardware design experience, including people leadership experience

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
