Engineering Manager

Responsibilities:

• Leading an engineering function, you will make an impact across three main areas of Delivery, People, and Technology.
• Lead delivery for the team while contributing hands-on: setting direction, unblocking, and managing dependencies to land product and technical objectives.
• Absorb and re-scope quickly when the team's priority target changes. Tiger teams follow the business's most urgent need, not a fixed backlog.
• Own sprint discipline end to end: a groomed, ready backlog, work sized and scoped before it's committed, a consistent cadence, and throughput the team and its stakeholders can plan against.
• Partner with engineering leadership and adjacent teams to align roadmaps, distribute workstreams effectively, enable knowledge transfer, and land cross-team initiatives.
• Run delivery across time zones: design workstreams, handoffs, and written communication so the team stays effective against partner teams and stakeholders in Melbourne and New York, decisions and context are captured in writing rather than lost in a call, and neither side sits blocked waiting.
• Agree scope, definition of done, and handoff terms with the team that owns the domain before work starts, coordinating closely with the domain PM.
• Evolve team processes and reporting to make delivery reliable and predictable as the team scales.

• Steward your domain's architecture and technical direction, ensuring solutions meet business objectives and align with our Engineering Principles, Tech Radar, and architecture standards.
• Establishes patterns and guidelines for an AI-first team: Agentic coding tools, AI-assisted review, and AI in the product itself.
• Champion responsible operational ownership of your team's systems' fit-for-purpose support, observability, and reliability for the demands each system faces.
• Continuously assess team capabilities against the technical demands of the roadmap, and close gaps through hiring, training, or rotation.

Requirements:

• 7+ years of experience managing engineering teams, ideally in consumer or marketplace settings.
• Deep experience building web applications with Ruby, Ruby on Rails, and PostgreSQL.
• 5 years working with HTML5 CSS3 and modern JavaScript (ES6+).
• Track record of leading engineering teams to deliver complex software, including modern agile practices, dependency management, and cross-team coordination.
• Strong understanding of modern software development practices and architectural patterns across one or more of cloud, web, native mobile, or data.
• Demonstrable, current experience using and setting up the team for agentic AI tooling in production engineering work, including adoption, review standards, and quality guardrails.
• Experience operating inside a globally distributed engineering organisation, with the written communication and async judgment to keep work moving with leadership and partner teams in other time zones.
• Demonstrated ownership of capacity planning and forecasting, not just sprint execution.
