Job Title: Senior Software Engineer, Windows-on-Linux Compatibility
Location: Beijing, Shanghai
Employment Type: Full-time
The job
This role is the deep technical authority for running large, graphics-intensive Windows desktop applications on Chinese (Xinchuang) Linux platforms such as Kylin and UOS, on domestic hardware, using open-source compatibility and emulation layers (Wine, Mono, VKD3D/DXVK, Proton). You will lead, hands-on, the engineering work that makes these applications install, license, render, and run reliably on Linux, and you will build the packaging and build pipeline that turns supplied application binaries into a compliant, installable China distribution.
A defining element of the role is depth and breadth: you will be one of the strongest low-level and systems engineers on the team, but also a pragmatic generalist technical leader, able to break a large, monolithic desktop application into testable concerns, set the engineering approach, mentor other engineers, and make the final technical calls under real constraints.
You will be a technical anchor of the Center’s Windows-on-Linux compatibility capability, working closely with R&D colleagues elsewhere in AVEVA, and representing the compatibility engineering viewpoint in technical decisions.
Key responsibilities
Lead the compatibility engineering effort (hands-on)
- Own the technical approach to running Windows desktop applications under compatibility layers (Wine, Mono, VKD3D/DXVK, Proton) on Kylin and UOS.
- Diagnose and resolve compatibility blockers end to end across the stack: on-prem licensing, supporting services and message queuing, graphics and rendering (Vulkan, OpenGL, GDI, DWM, fonts), filesystem and path/locale handling, the .NET/CLR runtime, and software protection technologies.
- Contribute fixes upstream to open-source projects (for example Wine) and to application code where authorized.
- Provide regular, clear updates to local and global leadership on technical progress, risks, and the feasibility outlook.
Packaging, build, and CI/CD
- Design and build the packaging pipeline that ingests supplied application binaries, configuration, and an embedded compatibility-layer runtime, and produces an installable China package (for example DB, RPM, or image formats) on Linux.
- Establish CI/CD on Linux (including Ali Cloud) for reproducible builds and automated validation, drawing on established practice from other AVEVA product lines already building on Linux.
Set technical direction and raise the bar
- Act as a hands-on senior developer and technical mentor: set engineering standards, review designs and code, and unblock other engineers.
- Decompose the application into layers and concerns and drive a granular, evidence-based validation approach (Wine for Windows APIs, Mono for .NET, VKD3D for DirectX), rather than a single pass/fail.
- Support test automation on Linux (for example FlaUI / UI Automation and C#-based approaches) and early performance characterization on domestic hardware.
Collaborate globally and transfer knowledge
- Work daily with R&D colleagues in other AVEVA locations and with global product management; represent the compatibility engineering position in cross-team technical decisions.
- Document findings, baselines, and build and packaging procedures, and lead knowledge transfer so the capability scales across the local team.
Essential requirements
- Deep, hands-on experience with Windows-compatibility and emulation layers on Linux: Wine (and/or Proton), Mono, and DXVK/VKD3D, including diagnosing and patching low-level behaviour.
- Strong systems-level engineering across both Windows and Linux internals: Win32/NT APIs, DLLs and services, the registry, filesystem and path handling, and graphics stacks (DirectX, Vulkan, OpenGL, GDI).
- Proficient in C/C++ and C#/.NET, comfortable reading and patching native and managed code, with solid scripting (Bash, Python).
- Experience building, packaging, and running CI/CD on Linux (containers and RPM/deb/image packaging), ideally with reproducible builds.
- Excellent cross-stack debugging, from crashes, rendering, and licensing faults through to performance bottlenecks.
- Generalist breadth and technical leadership: able to set standards, mentor engineers, decompose complex problems, and make pragmatic calls under constraints.
- Fluent business English, with the ability to lead technical discussions with global colleagues.
Desired skills and competencies
- Familiarity with Chinese Linux distributions (Kylin, UOS) and domestic hardware (Hygon, ARM), and the Xinchuang compliance context.
- Experience with on-prem licensing technologies (for example Sentinel RMS / Thales, FlexLM) and software anti-tamper or protection technologies.
- Experience with desktop UI automation (FlaUI / UI Automation) and test frameworks.
- Knowledge of message-queuing technologies and modern replacement patterns (named pipes, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ).
- Development or deep-user experience with graphics-heavy engineering or CAD desktop applications.
- A track record of upstream open-source contribution (for example to Wine).
