Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities

• Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
• Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
• Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
• Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
• Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
• Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

What will you be doing?

Barclays Services LLC seeks Senior Distributed Systems Engineer in Whippany, NJ (multiple positions available):

• Design and implement RESTful microservices for ultra low latency decisioning, built with Java (JDK 17+) / Spring Boot, containerized and orchestrated for horizontal scale, with robust observability and SLOs.
• Design, implement, and maintain rule-based decisioning engines that automate business processes and enable dynamic, data-driven decision making, utilizing frameworks and technologies to ensure flexibility, scalability, and seamless integration with enterprise platforms.
• Design and engineer features from complex datasets for fraud models by applying advanced data transformation, extraction, and selection techniques to support the development of robust predictive models.
• Deliver containerized/serverless workloads on AWS (or equivalent) aligned with internal aPaaS/managed services standards; optimize for cost, performance, and resilience.
• Build platform components for resiliency (multi AZ/region patterns), implement automated monitoring/alerting, and follow secure coding with SCA/SAST tools (e.g., SonarQube, Veracode).
• Automate builds and deployments (e.g., Maven, Jenkins/GitLab CI), maintain trunk-based workflows, and contribute to documentation and runbooks (Jira/Confluence).
• Utilize Java and J2EE to develop robust, high-performance, and scalable enterprise applications.
• Leverage Spring and Spring Boot frameworks to rapidly deliver deployable web and batch applications.
• Develop event-driven solutions leveraging messaging platforms such as Apache Kafka to capture real-time customer events, facilitating advanced data modeling and predictive analytics.
• Build microservices to decompose complex functionalities into streamlined, maintainable, and efficient service components for enhanced performance.
• Employ source code management and continuous integration tools, including Maven, Jenkins, gitlab and Bitbucket, to package Java applications for deployment on public cloud platforms.
• Utilize software development lifecycle tools such as JIRA, Confluence, and SonarQube to support daily development and project management activities.
• May telecommute pursuant to company policies. [Hybrid role]

Salary / Rate Minimum/yr: $166,000 per year

Salary / Rate Maximum/yr: $175,000 per year

The minimum and maximum salary/rate information above includes only base salary or base hourly rate. It does not include any other type of compensation or benefits that may be available.
