Job Description
The Procees Engineer reports to the Technical Leader and serves as the primary engineering resource supporting assigned manufacturing lines and processes. Responsible for leading process improvement initiatives, equipment optimization, troubleshooting efforts, and small capital improvements that support plant and departmental objectives.
The Process Engineer utilizes data-driven decision making to improve Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, and People (SQDCP) metrics while ensuring stable and reliable manufacturing operations. This role requires balancing multiple projects of varying complexity while collaborating with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, EHS, Supply Chain, R&D, and external vendors.
Primary responsibilities include:
Supporting production through daily technical troubleshooting and problem resolution.
Driving capacity expansion through process optimization and automation.
Leading quality, waste reduction, reliability, and cost improvement initiatives.
Supporting modernization and capital project execution.
Developing technical capabilities within maintenance and operations teams.
Applying engineering principles and analytics to improve manufacturing performance.
Essential Functions
Manufacturing Support & Continuous Improvement
Serve as the primary engineering support resource for assigned manufacturing lines.
Lead root cause investigations and implement sustainable corrective actions for safety, quality, downtime, and efficiency issues.
Utilize data analytics and statistical tools to identify losses, prioritize opportunities, and verify results of improvement activities.
Develop and execute process improvement initiatives that improve OEE, throughput, yield, and labor efficiency.
Support troubleshooting of complex automated manufacturing equipment incorporating mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, servo, vision, and PLC-based control systems.
Develop a thorough understanding of manufacturing processes, equipment functionality, and process interactions.
Equipment & Process Engineering
Design, develop, and implement equipment modifications and machine improvements that enhance safety, reliability, capacity, and quality.
Lead equipment optimization efforts through process capability improvements, setup reduction, and standardization.
Create, modify, and maintain detailed technical drawings, tooling designs, fixtures, and machine components using CAD software.
Support equipment validation activities and implementation of new manufacturing technologies.
Partner with Maintenance personnel to improve equipment reliability through predictive and preventive maintenance strategies.
Capital Projects & Automation
Support and lead capital projects from concept through implementation.
Develop project scopes, schedules, cost estimates, and capital appropriation requests.
Coordinate installation, commissioning, validation, and startup activities.
Provide technical oversight to equipment vendors, contractors, and integrators.
Participate in automation, digital manufacturing, and modernization initiatives to improve operational effectiveness.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner closely with Operations, Quality, Maintenance, EHS, Supply Chain, Procurement, and R&D teams to achieve business objectives.
Coordinate activities between equipment suppliers, corporate engineering resources, and site leadership.
Evaluate and recommend vendors, materials, and technologies that improve reliability, quality, and cost performance.
Provide technical expertise during new product introductions, process changes, and line transfers.
Technical Leadership & Development
Mentor Engineering Technicians, Maintenance Technicians, and less experienced Engineers.
Facilitate structured problem-solving methodologies and continuous improvement activities.
Develop and deliver technical training programs that improve organizational capability.
Lead project teams and influence stakeholders across multiple functions and organizational levels.
Promote a culture of accountability, safety, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Compliance & Documentation
Ensure compliance with BD quality systems, regulatory requirements, and engineering standards.
Maintain and update engineering documentation including:
Engineering Change Notifications (ECNs)
Validation protocols and reports
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Preventive Maintenance documentation
Bills of Materials (BOMs)
Equipment specifications and technical drawings
Support audit readiness and regulatory compliance activities.
Financial Accountability
Develop business cases and ROI analyses for capital and improvement projects.
Manage approved project budgets and expenditures.
Deliver measurable cost reductions, waste reduction, and operational efficiency improvements.
Support annual planning and strategic manufacturing objectives.
Additional Responsibilities
Spend approximately 70% or more of time in manufacturing areas supporting operations, troubleshooting, and improvement efforts.
Direct and coordinate technical resources during equipment installations, modifications, and startup activities.
Support emergency response efforts related to manufacturing equipment and processes.
Provide functional leadership for project teams and technical resources as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
Required
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline.
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Equivalent combination of education and applicable manufacturing engineering experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirements.
Experience
Experience troubleshooting highly automated manufacturing equipment in a regulated production environment.
Experience with process improvement methodologies, root cause analysis, and project management preferred.
Experience with capital projects, equipment installation, automation, or modernization initiatives preferred.
Experience may be considered across multiple levels based on qualifications and demonstrated capabilities.
