About Campus

Campus is on a mission to accelerate the talent of tomorrow and reimagine what college can (and should) be. The problem is clear: college costs have skyrocketed, but outcomes haven’t. Traditional college hasn’t kept up with the aspirations of today’s students-and they can’t afford to wait.

At Campus, we’ve built a two-year, accredited college where students learn from top professors at universities like Princeton, Stanford, and Howard, in live, online classes. Our students graduate with in-demand business and AI skills-ready to launch their careers or transfer to top four-year universities. Our unique approach is grounded in a pioneering technology platform and a heavily-researched student success model that offers students dedicated advisors and on-demand tutoring and coaching. We were also named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies of 2024.

We’re backed by an exceptional investor team that believes deeply in our vision for the future of education, including General Catalyst, Founders Fund, Bloomberg Beta, 8VC, Rethink Education, Sam Altman, Jason Citron, Shaquille O’Neal, and others.

The world has changed. Higher ed needs to catch up, and we’re leading the way - come join us!

About the Role

We're looking for a Senior Staff or Staff Software Engineer to take on some of the most important and technically challenging problems at Campus.

This role isn't tied to a predetermined team or narrow product surface. We're intentionally looking for an exceptional engineer first and will align scope around the intersection of Campus's highest-priority problems and where you can have the most leverage.

You might lead the technical direction for a critical product area, solve a problem that cuts across several parts of our platform, build foundations that make the rest of engineering faster, or take an ambiguous company priority from problem definition through production.

We're a small engineering organization, so this is a highly hands-on role. You'll write and ship code while also influencing architecture, technical direction, and how we approach engineering as the company grows.

The common thread is ownership: we want someone who can identify what matters, bring clarity to ambiguous problems, make excellent technical decisions, and help other engineers do their best work.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will…

  • Own technically complex, high-impact problems from ambiguity through production and iteration.

  • Work across the stack and across product areas rather than being constrained to a narrow technical domain.

  • Shape architecture and technical direction while remaining deeply involved in implementation.

  • Partner closely with product, design, operations, and company leadership to determine what we should build and how.

  • Identify technical investments that create leverage for other engineers and product teams.

  • Raise the quality of engineering decisions through design, code review, mentorship, and technical leadership.

  • Make pragmatic tradeoffs between speed, simplicity, reliability, and long-term maintainability.

  • Use modern AI tools to increase your own engineering leverage and help shape how we build software in an AI-native development environment.

  • Help evolve our engineering practices and technical foundations as the team and product scale.

The kinds of problems you might work on

We don't want to pretend we know exactly what you'll be working on six months before you join. Some of the areas where our engineers are building today include:

  • Learning: Building the core technology students and faculty use to teach, learn, and engage at Campus.

  • Student Experience: Creating products that help students successfully navigate their education from onboarding through graduation.

  • Growth: Building the systems that help prospective students discover, apply to, and enroll at Campus.

  • Internal Platforms & Operations: Building technology that allows a complex, regulated organization to operate efficiently without scaling headcount linearly.

  • Engineering Foundations: Improving the architecture, infrastructure, developer experience, and technical systems that allow a small engineering team to move quickly as Campus grows.

Your initial scope will be shaped by the most important problems facing the company and where your experience can have the greatest impact.

You’ll be a great fit if you have:

  • A track record of owning complex software systems or product initiatives with meaningful technical and business impact.

  • Deep software engineering fundamentals and the ability to move comfortably between architecture and implementation.

  • Experience taking ambiguous problems, creating technical clarity, and driving them through execution.

  • Strong judgment about when to build for the future and when the simplest solution is the right one.

  • Experience influencing technical decisions beyond your immediate codebase or team.

  • A history of making other engineers more effective through mentorship, technical leadership, tooling, architecture, or improved engineering practices.

  • The ability to communicate technical decisions and tradeoffs clearly to both engineering and non-engineering partners.

  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment where ownership is high and organizational boundaries are intentionally lightweight.

  • Curiosity about how AI is changing software development and a desire to use these tools thoughtfully in your own engineering workflow.

What you’ll get:

  • A compensation package that includes a base salary of $210-240k for Staff Engineers or $255-280k for Senior Staff Engineers + equity grant

    • Actual compensation within the pay range will be decided based on factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior relevant experience, and specific work location. For roles that are available to be filled remotely, base salary will be localized.

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance

  • 401(k) match

  • Fertility benefits via Carrot

  • Flexible Time Away + paid holidays

  • In-office lunches for our NY Office (did we mention, we’re dog friendly? )

  • Hybrid work schedule (Mon & Fri remote; Tues-Thurs in-office)

  • Social events - happy hours, birthday celebrations, holiday parties, & more!

  • Opportunity to make an impact - you’ll be an integral player in bringing our vision to life

Where we’re located: Tribeca, NY

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer new H-1B visa sponsorship for this position. Candidates must already be authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring new H-1B sponsorship. However, we can support H-1B transfers and are able to sponsor TN visas for eligible Canadian and Mexican citizens.
