Senior IT Systems Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Senior IT Systems Engineer to join our IT team. This is an opportunity for a technically capable and proactive engineer to work across a broad technology estate, lead infrastructure improvements, deliver strategic projects and help shape the future direction of our technology environment. Technology plays a critical role in enabling the firm to deliver exceptional service to clients, and we are continuing to invest in modern, secure, cloud-first platforms that support our global operations.

Working within a hybrid, cloud-first environment, you will provide senior-level support and engineering expertise across Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, identity and security platforms, virtualisation technologies and key business applications. You will play an important role in maintaining secure, resilient and high-performing services while driving automation, operational efficiency and continual improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure Engineering & Cloud Services

• Administer, support and enhance Collas Crill's Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 environments.
• Manage and maintain Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory, Group Policy, Windows Server and associated infrastructure services.
• Support cloud and hybrid infrastructure, including virtual machines, networking, storage and secure connectivity.
• Maintain the availability, performance, security and resilience of critical business systems and services.
• Monitor infrastructure health, capacity and performance, proactively identifying and resolving potential issues before they impact users.
• Support backup, recovery and disaster recovery solutions, including regular testing and validation.
• Work with application owners and third-party suppliers to support key business and legal applications.

Project Delivery & Continuous Improvement

• Participate in the design, implementation and delivery of infrastructure and business systems projects.
• Contribute to the firm's ongoing cloud transformation and infrastructure modernisation initiatives.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, implementation plans and support procedures.
• Create and maintain PowerShell scripts and automation solutions to improve efficiency, consistency and reliability.
• Identify opportunities to utilise automation, AI-assisted administration and modern management tools to enhance service delivery.
• Assist with the migration, consolidation and retirement of legacy systems and technologies.

Security & Modern Workplace

• Support and maintain identity, access management and security controls across the technology estate.
• Assist with vulnerability management, patching, compliance and infrastructure security initiatives.
• Support modern Microsoft technologies, including Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Defender, Conditional Access and endpoint management platforms.
• Contribute to the firm's adoption of Zero Trust and security best practices.

Technical Leadership & Support

• Provide third-line infrastructure and application support across the firm's global user base.
• Take ownership of complex incidents and technical problems, applying structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis to deliver permanent solutions.
• Mentor and support colleagues within the IT team, sharing knowledge and helping develop technical capability.
• Participate in major incident management, technical investigations and problem resolution activities.
• Communicate technical concepts clearly to colleagues, management and third-party suppliers.

Participate in the out-of-hours support rota as required.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

• Minimum six years' experience in infrastructure engineering, systems administration or a similar technical role.
• Strong experience supporting hybrid environments spanning cloud and on-premises infrastructure.
• Hands-on experience with:
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Microsoft 365
  • Microsoft Entra ID
  • Active Directory
  • Windows Server
  • Group Policy
• Experience administering Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, Teams and SharePoint Online.
• Good understanding of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, firewalls and hybrid connectivity.
• Experience supporting infrastructure security, patching, vulnerability management, backup and disaster recovery solutions.
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with experience resolving complex technical issues.
• Practical PowerShell scripting and automation experience.
• Experience delivering infrastructure projects and working with third-party suppliers.
• Excellent communication, organisational and documentation skills.
• Ability to work independently while managing competing priorities.

Desirable

• Experience within a law firm, financial services or professional services environment.
• Experience supporting iManage Cloud and other enterprise business applications.
• Experience with Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Defender, Purview and Conditional Access.
• Exposure to VMware, Citrix Virtual Apps & Desktops and FSLogix.
• Experience with Azure Virtual Desktop.
• Experience supporting SQL Server and enterprise backup platforms such as Veeam.
• Experience delivering cloud migrations, SaaS integrations and modernisation programmes.
• Microsoft, Azure or security-related certifications.
