Senior Director Backend

We are looking for a highly experienced Director of Engineering - Backend to lead large-scale backend engineering teams for a high-growth B2C/D2C consumer platform. This role requires a strong technology leader with deep expertise in building scalable distributed systems, driving engineering excellence, and leading high-performing teams in fast-paced product organizations. The ideal candidate should have strong exposure to consumer internet products, high-scale backend architecture, platform reliability, and cross-functional leadership while working closely with Product, Business, and Data teams.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and scale multiple backend engineering teams delivering large-scale B2C/D2C products.
• Define and drive backend architecture, engineering roadmap, and platform scalability initiatives.
• Build highly scalable, reliable, secure, and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Data, and Business stakeholders to deliver customer-centric solutions.
• Drive engineering best practices across system design, coding standards, CI/CD, observability, and release management.
• Own backend platform performance, uptime, latency optimization, and infrastructure scalability.
• Mentor Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers, and senior developers to build strong technical leadership.
• Drive architecture reviews, technical decision-making, and modernization initiatives.
• Improve development velocity, operational efficiency, and engineering productivity.
• Hire, retain, and develop top engineering talent while fostering a strong engineering culture.
• Partner with leadership teams on strategic planning, execution, and long-term technology vision.

Requirements:

• 14-18 years of overall engineering experience with strong backend engineering expertise.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams in B2C/D2C consumer-facing product companies.
• Strong experience in designing and scaling large-scale distributed systems and microservices architecture.
• Hands-on exposure to backend technologies such as Java, Golang, Python, or Node.js .
• Strong understanding of system design, API architecture, event-driven systems, caching, and database optimization.
• Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Expertise in scalability, performance optimization, observability, and reliability engineering.
• Strong exposure to DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and Kubernetes.
• Experience managing multiple teams and senior engineering leaders.
• Excellent stakeholder management and business communication skills.
• Prior experience in high-growth startups or large-scale product organizations is highly preferred.
• Experience in consumer internet, eCommerce, marketplace, retail-tech, loyalty, or engagement platforms.
• Exposure to data-driven product engineering and experimentation platforms.
• Strong understanding of customer experience and high-traffic systems.
• Experience driving platform modernization and engineering transformation initiatives.
