Sr. Engineering Manager - Mobile

We are looking for a highly accomplished Senior Engineering Manager who has evolved from a strong mobile engineering background into leading large-scale backend engineering teams. The ideal candidate should have started their career as an Android or iOS developer, spent approximately 6-8 years building and scaling mobile applications, and subsequently transitioned into managing backend engineering teams and distributed systems over the last 4-5 years. This role requires a technology leader who understands the complete product engineering lifecycle from mobile user experience to backend architecture powering millions of transactions and users. The individual will be responsible for driving engineering excellence, architecture decisions, team leadership, platform scalability, and cross-functional collaboration.

The core responsibilities for the job include the following:

Engineering Leadership:

• Lead and mentor multiple engineering teams across backend and mobile domains.
• Drive engineering strategy, technical roadmap, and execution planning aligned with business objectives.
• Build high-performing teams through hiring, coaching, performance management, and career development.
• Foster a culture of innovation, ownership, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.

Backend Platform Ownership:

• Own architecture and development of scalable, secure, highly available backend systems.
• Drive system design reviews and architectural governance for large-scale distributed systems.
• Ensure reliability, performance, scalability, and observability of platform services.
• Establish engineering best practices around coding standards, CI/CD, testing, monitoring, and release management.

Mobile Engineering Expertise:

• Leverage deep Android and/or iOS development experience to influence mobile architecture and platform decisions.
• Collaborate with mobile engineering teams to improve app performance, stability, user experience, and development efficiency.
• Guide teams on mobile-backend integrations, API design, and platform scalability.

Stakeholder Management:

• Partner closely with Product, Design, Data, Infrastructure, Security, and Business teams.
• Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Communicate technical strategy and execution updates to senior leadership.

Delivery and Execution:

• Drive end-to-end delivery of critical initiatives with predictable execution.
• Manage engineering metrics, delivery timelines, quality benchmarks, and operational KPIs.
• Ensure high engineering velocity while maintaining platform reliability and technical quality.

Requirements:

• 13-17 years of overall software engineering experience.
• Career should have started with hands-on Android and/or iOS application development.
• Minimum 8-10 years of strong mobile engineering experience.
• Last 4-5 years leading backend engineering teams and platform development.
• Experience managing engineering managers, technical leads, and senior engineers.

Technical Skills:

• Strong expertise in Android (Kotlin/Java) or iOS (Swift/Objective-C) development.
• Deep understanding of backend technologies such as Java, Kotlin, Go, Node.js, Python, or similar modern backend stacks.
• Strong experience with distributed systems, microservices architecture, event-driven systems, and cloud-native applications.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure environments.
• Knowledge of databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, and Elasticsearch and messaging systems such as Kafka.
• Expertise in API architecture, scalability, performance optimisation, and security best practices.
• Strong understanding of DevOps, CI/CD, observability, monitoring, and SRE principles.

• Experience working in high-growth consumer internet, e-commerce, fintech, food-tech, mobility, or large-scale digital platforms preferred.

Preferred Background:

• Experience building products serving millions of users and handling high transaction volumes.
• Prior experience in organisations such as consumer internet, e-commerce, fintech, mobility, gaming, food delivery, or digital-first platforms.
• Exposure to both mobile-first product development and backend platform engineering.
• Experience managing teams of 20+ engineers across multiple functions.
