WMYD Detroit is seeking an experienced and dynamic Sideline Reporter / Host, Sports to lead sideline reporting efforts during live sports events, provide comprehensive analysis, conduct engaging interviews, and host studio segments across Scripps Sports programming. This role plays a critical part in shaping Scripps Sports journalism while building and maintaining our reputation as a trusted sports news and information provider.
The ideal candidate combines exceptional reporting skills, on-air presence, sports expertise, and journalistic integrity to deliver compelling coverage that informs and connects with audiences across broadcast, digital, and social platforms.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Provide live coverage from the sidelines during sporting events, delivering real-time updates, analysis, and exclusive interviews with athletes, coaches, and officials.
- Deliver clear, engaging, and informative commentary that enhances the viewer experience and provides context to game action.
- Conduct high-profile pre-game, halftime, and post-game interviews, developing relationships with key sports figures to secure compelling content and perspectives.
- Collaborate with analysts, guest commentators, and production teams to deliver balanced, insightful, and engaging sports discussions.
- Host a magazine-style sports program featuring major league teams, athletes, storylines, and league developments.
- Research and gather timely information regarding teams, players, standings, statistics, recent games, and upcoming matchups.
- Develop talking points, interview questions, and discussion topics for broadcasts, interviews, and panel discussions.
- Stay informed on major sports news, trades, injuries, league developments, and other events impacting coverage.
- Maintain the highest standards of journalistic integrity, accuracy, fairness, and professionalism.
- Mentor and support junior reporters and hosts by sharing best practices and fostering professional development.
- Engage audiences through social media, live chats, community events, and interactive digital platforms.
- Utilize social media to promote coverage, build audience engagement, and extend storytelling opportunities beyond game broadcasts.
- Collaborate closely with producers, directors, and newsroom leadership to identify and develop compelling sports content.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, broadcasting, sports media, or a related discipline preferred, or equivalent years of experience.
- Generally, 5+ years of experience in sports reporting, hosting, sports broadcasting, or a related field preferred.
- Experience with live reporting, high-profile interviews, panel discussions, and on-air hosting.
- Demonstrated experience covering live sporting events in a fast-paced broadcast environment.
- Ability to travel and work evenings, weekends, holidays, and non-traditional schedules based on sports programming requirements.

- Deep understanding of sports analytics and the ability to interpret and communicate statistics effectively.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with production teams, analysts, executives, and league partners.
- Commitment to journalistic ethics, accuracy, and credibility.
- Existing relationships with key figures within the sports industry preferred.
- Multilingual abilities that enable engagement with diverse audiences are a plus.
