Role Overview

Eutelsat is seeking a 5G NTN RAN design, simulation and integration engineer to work on 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) systems, integrating satellite access into an end-to-end 5G system spanning the Core, ground and transport networks, payload and mission operations.

You'll contribute to the design and optimisation of the RAN architecture and work closely with RAN vendors and engineering subcontractors through co-engineering, implementation and integration. You'll collaborate closely with internal engineering, onboard-processing and supplier teams to ensure that supplier implementations meet system requirements and standards, and integrate cleanly into the end-to-end system.

You'll also help integrate the satellite access network and Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) system with the 5G Core, transport networks, payload, Mission Control Centre and operational support systems. A core part of the work is translating functional architecture, system requirements and functional chains into complete, consistent, implementable and verifiable requirements.

Key Responsibilities

RAN design and simulation

  • Contribute to the design and optimisation of the 5G NTN RAN architecture and functionalities.
  • Evaluate algorithms and system parameters to optimise overall network performance.
  • Analyse the impact of scheduling strategies, QoS mechanisms, mobility procedures and resource allocation.
  • Support performance analysis through modelling and simulation.

Supplier support

  • Work closely with RAN suppliers during co-engineering, implementation and integration activities.
  • Review supplier technical documentation, design proposals and implementation plans.
  • Monitor vendors technical activities and support technical follow-up throughout development.
  • Participate in technical workshops, design reviews and engineering discussions.
  • Support the resolution of technical issues identified during implementation and integration.

Integration

  • Support integration between the RAN, onboard processing functions, payload and the wider communication system.
  • Collaborate with HW engineers, onboard processing engineers and system engineering teams.
  • Support interoperability, verification and system integration activities.

Required Experience

  • Degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in end-to-end functional architecture, system architecture or systems engineering for complex telecommunications or other distributed systems.
  • Solid grasp of 5G System architecture, including the interactions between user equipment, NG-RAN, the 5G Core, transport networks and service platforms.
  • Experience in 5G NR RAN design, with a strong understanding of the 5G NR (and ideally NTN) protocol stack.
  • Working knowledge of 3GPP 5G and NTN standards and architecture.
  • Experience with radio resource management (RRM), scheduling algorithms, QoS mechanisms or MAC-layer optimisation.
  • Experience in system requirements analysis, design and development of access-network subsystems, with a focus on 5G solutions.
  • Experience working with telecommunications suppliers during development or integration projects.
  • Experience with communication-system modelling and performance analysis, using MATLAB or a similar simulation tool.
  • Strong knowledge of O-RAN architecture and SMO, including SMO interfaces and its role in RAN configuration, orchestration and assurance.
  • Ability to analyse complex technical problems and propose sound engineering solutions.

Desirable Experience

  • Master's or PhD degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience with service-platform, orchestration, management or OSS interfaces.
  • Experience with LEO, MEO or GEO satellite communication systems.
  • Experience with onboard-processing (OBP) architectures and satellite payload implementation.
  • Experience with cloud-native RAN, containerised network functions (CNFs) and Kubernetes-based deployments.
  • Knowledge of beamforming and beam-hopping configuration and modelling.
  • Knowledge of IP networking, timing and synchronisation, and transport technologies used in 5G networks.
  • Experience supporting multi-vendor interoperability and system integration.
  • Experience on large-scale or multi-supplier telecommunications or satellite programmes, including collaborative programmes with industrial partners, research organisations or public institutions.
  • Experience with verification, validation and operational-readiness activities, and with maintaining traceability across requirements, designs, supplier deliverables and verification evidence.
  • Familiarity with model-based systems engineering (MBSE), requirements-management or architecture-modelling tools.

Candidate Profile

  • You collaborate naturally across RAN, systems, onboard-processing and software domains, and with external vendors and subcontractors throughout the design-to-integration lifecycle.
  • You're confident and clear in technical discussions, design reviews and supplier workshops, able to explain complex concepts to internal teams and suppliers alike.
  • You can read technical specifications, standards and supplier documentation critically, spotting inconsistencies and implementation risks.
  • You work independently and exercise sound engineering judgement, while balancing technical quality against programme schedules and delivery priorities.
  • You can turn functional architecture and system needs into clear, consistent and verifiable requirements, and trace them through design, supplier deliverables and verification.
  • You're proactive, analytical and detail-oriented, and you adapt well as technical requirements evolve.
