Job Introduction
Frequentis Group with headquarters in Vienna is an international supplier of communication and information systems for control centres with safety-critical tasks. Worldwide, more than 500 customers in some 150 countries with more than 45,000 workstations already trust our know-how and proven experience.
In the Public Transport business unit, we are facing a major technological transition from GSM-R to FRMCS across all our European railway customers. Our Public Transport division enables and supports a smooth migration of existing solutions towards the new railway communication standard. In doing so, we - and you - contribute to the mobility of the future and to improving the environmental footprint of the transport sector (“Green Deal”).
The Infrastructure Team owns the platform that underpins our product solution (FTS 3020), covering all software components and OSI layers below the application layer. This includes operating systems, container and platform technologies, databases, middleware, automation, security services, storage, networking, virtualisation, and platform architecture.
As Operational Product Manager (OPM), you drive the structure, prioritisation, and coordination of these areas. You will navigate complex technical discussions, prepare informed decisions, and transform business and technical requirements into clear roadmaps, budgets, and implementation plans..
Key Tasks
- Coordinate a small, specialised cross-functional team consisting of a Software Architect, Security Agents, an experienced Lead Engineer, and a Junior Engineer.
- Gather, assess, and prioritise requirements from customer projects, Product Management, Engineering, Delivery, Security, Procurement, and Operations in a structured manner.
- Translate technical infrastructure topics into clear decision-making frameworks by evaluating business value, customer benefit, costs, risks, effort, lifecycle implications, and relevance to the standard product.
- Develop and maintain a realistic Infrastructure Roadmap, including obsolescence management, lifecycle planning, bug-fixing initiatives, and continuous improvement measures.
- Facilitate technical discussions and alignment across stakeholders without necessarily being the subject matter expert in every technical detail.
- Prepare make-or-buy decisions, standard product versus customer-specific solution assessments, and architectural recommendations in close collaboration with technical experts.
- Coordinate implementation and action backlogs, resources, dependencies, budget contributions, and project plans related to infrastructure and platform topics.
- Ensure transparency and alignment with Strategic Product Management, Development, Delivery, Project Management, and other internal stakeholders.
Typical Infrastructure Topics
- Platform & Operations: RHEL, virtualisation, bare metal vs. virtualisation, OpenShift, Kubernetes, Talos Linux, storage, networking, high availability, IAM (Identity and Access Management)
- Automation & Delivery: Ansible, GitOps, Argo CD, container registry, deployment and configuration automation, backlog and release coordination
- Security & Data: PKI, KMS (Key Management Services), security hardening, backup & recovery, disaster recovery, compliance, data retention
Key Qualifications
- Several years of experience in technical project management, operational product management, product ownership, technical coordination, or a comparable role within an IT or infrastructure environment.
- Solid understanding of infrastructure and platform technologies, including operating systems, virtualisation, container platforms, databases, middleware, security, storage, networking, and automation.
- Strong affinity for IT security topics.
- Ability to assess technical discussions and translate them into clear decision-making options.
- Experience working with System Engineers, Software Architects, Delivery Teams, and Project Managers.
- Hands-on experience with agile or hybrid ways of working; familiarity with backlog management, JIRA, Confluence, or similar tools is considered an advantage.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication, and facilitation skills.
- Structured and self-driven working style with a passion for prioritisation, clarity, and execution.
- Excellent German and English language skills, combined with strong intercultural competence.
Why this role is exciting
- Shape the infrastructure foundation of a safety-critical public transport solution.
- Work at the intersection of technology, business, and customer requirements.
- Help transform diverse stakeholder needs into a sustainable standard product roadmap.
- Bring clarity to complex topics such as lifecycle management, security, automation, and platform architecture.
