Summary
- An Internal Control/Audit role evaluates, monitors, and improves an organization's risk management, governance, and internal control systems to safeguard assets and ensure compliance.
Core Role & Purpose
- Primary Objective: Provide independent, objective assurance and consulting to improve business operations, ensure financial reporting accuracy, and maintain adherence to laws and company policies.
- Line of Defense: Internal control operates as the first/second line (designing and monitoring daily operational controls), while internal audit acts as the third line (independent and retrospective evaluation).
Key Responsibilities
- Reporting & Remediation: Document audit findings, write reports for management or the Audit Committee, and track issue remediation.
- Control Evaluation: Assess the design and operational effectiveness of internal controls, including segregation of duties and access permissions.
- Investigations & Fraud Detection: Review physical and electronic records, reconcile physical inventory to book records, and investigate suspected irregularities.
- Auditing & Testing: Execute risk-based internal audits, process walkthroughs, and operational/financial reviews.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Liaise with external auditors, department heads, and executive leadership to promote transparency and accountability.
- Risk & Compliance Management: Identify operational, financial, and regulatory risks, using frameworks like COSO or SOX.
