MOE's DXD is hiring a Senior/Lead UX Designer to lead design craft and user research across its student-facing digital products (including the Student Learning Space). The role requires 10+ years of UX experience and involves shaping high-quality, evidence-driven experiences while collaborating cross-functionally with product, engineering, and curriculum teams. Beyond execution, the designer will also help grow and mentor the student mission design team. 

Overview

At DXD (Digital Excellence & Products Division), Ministry of Education (MOE), we work on the digital experiences that shape how students learn, how teachers support that learning, and how parents stay connected to their child's education.

We are looking for a Senior / Lead UX Designer to drive design craft and user experience across MOE's student missions. The Student Learning Space (SLS) is a key focus, but this role covers the broader student product portfolio and involves working across teacher and parent domains to deliver experiences that feel connected and coherent.

This is a design-first role. In the first 6 to 12 months, you will lead the design of key student-facing experiences, setting a high bar for craft, interaction quality, and visual coherence, while running discovery work to better understand how students and teachers engage with digital learning tools. You will also help build out the design practice for the student mission, putting in place rituals, standards, and ways of working for a growing team. Day to day, you will work closely with product managers, curriculum specialists, and developers to shape and ship solutions grounded in evidence and design excellence.

[What you will be working on]  

Design Craft and Execution (Primary)

• Set and uphold a high standard of design quality across the student product portfolio, covering interaction design, visual design, information architecture, and accessibility
• Design user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes that balance usability, learning outcomes, and technical feasibility
• Contribute to shared design patterns and components that keep student products consistent and aligned with teacher and parent domains
• Deliver design specifications that enable smooth implementation, with close attention to how content and UI interact in learning contexts

   

Discovery and User Research (Primary)

• Lead user research with students and teachers to understand how digital tools support and get in the way of learning
• Map end-to-end learning journeys across the student product portfolio, drawing on qualitative research and behavioural data to surface design opportunities
• Run usability testing and iterate based on evidence, working across mission boundaries (teachers, parents) to make sure the ecosystem holds together

   

Growing the Student Design Practice (Secondary)

• Put in place design rituals, critique processes, and quality standards for the student mission design team
• Mentor and support designers on the team, raising craft quality through hands-on feedback, design reviews, and knowledge sharing
• Contribute to the DXD-wide design community, shared standards, and cross-mission alignment

   

Stakeholder Engagement (Secondary)

• Work closely with product managers, curriculum specialists, and developers to align on user needs, learning outcomes, and delivery timelines
• Facilitate workshops and co-design sessions with educators and domain experts, and clearly articulate the thinking behind design decisions

What we are looking for  

Skills, Behaviours, and Attributes

• Strong design craft, with a solid track record in interaction design, visual design, and prototyping across complex digital products, including sensitivity to accessibility and content-heavy interfaces
• Ability to hold both the detail (pixel-level quality) and the bigger picture (cross-product coherence, design patterns, ecosystem thinking)
• Skilled in user research and usability testing, and comfortable using both qualitative and quantitative evidence to inform design decisions
• Experience setting up or growing a design practice, including rituals, critique culture, and quality standards
• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and shaping design direction in environments where processes are still taking shape
• A clear communicator who can make the case for design quality with product, engineering, and curriculum stakeholders
• Thoughtful and intentional use of AI tools in the design workflow

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Education Technology, or a related field
• At least 10 years of experience in UX design, product design, or interaction design roles
• A strong portfolio that demonstrates craft quality, design thinking, and the ability to ship complex products
• Experience designing for education, learning platforms, or content-rich multi-user products is highly valued
• Familiarity with public sector environments or large-scale platform design is a plus

• Reports to: Design Manager
• Works with: Product managers, curriculum specialists, developers, designers across teacher and parent missions, and the DXD design community
