The role develops recommendations and guides architecture, data stewardship, governance, roadmap execution, risk management, operational health, and the responsible adoption of AI, automation, and emerging Workday capabilities in alignment with the direction and priorities established by IT HCM Portfolio Leadership. The role understands the people and organizational impacts of the platform and designs solutions with those impacts in mind. The role partners with IT HCM and Finance Portfolio Leadership, the Workday Finance Solution Lead, HR stakeholders, Enterprise Architecture, Security, Data and Analytics, delivery teams, and strategic partners to align HCM standards and execution with shared capabilities across the broader Workday ecosystem.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and recommend the Workday HCM technical strategy, architecture, operating model, and standards for approval by IT HCM Portfolio Leadership, and advise on Workday HCM priorities for inclusion in the 18-month portfolio roadmap.
  • Apply deep Workday HCM expertise to evaluate platform capabilities, constraints, technical tradeoffs, and emerging functionality.
  • Establish Workday HCM architecture and platform standards across configuration, integrations, extensions, security, data, reporting, downstream consumption, and solution design, ensuring these components work together cohesively to support intuitive, effective user experiences, while providing technology stewardship for Workday HCM data integrity and access in partnership with business Data Owners and enterprise Data Governance.
  • Ensure solutions comply with enterprise architecture, security, privacy, change management, and technology standards.

Enterprise Workday & Financials Alignment

  • Partner with the Workday Financials (FIN) Solution Lead to align architecture, technology standards, integration patterns, security guardrails, environments, releases, and governance practices across Workday HCM, Financials, and shared capabilities.
  • Coordinate cross-platform dependencies and decisions affecting HCM, Financials, integrations, data, security, reporting, and shared capabilities.
  • Lead HCM architecture decisions for shared Workday capabilities and coordinate with the Workday Finance Solution Lead and enterprise teams on decisions that affect their areas.
  • Escalate unresolved cross-platform issues, decision conflicts, and risks to IT Portfolio Leadership for direction and resolution.

AI, Agents & Emerging Technology

  • Define the Workday HCM architecture, technical approach, and HCM-specific guardrails for AI, Agents, automation, Workday Extend, and emerging capabilities in alignment with enterprise AI, security, data, and architecture standards.
  • Co-govern Workday Extend with the Workday Finance Solution Lead, including shared modules, architecture standards, development practices, security, release coordination, and ownership of cross-functional capabilities.
  • Partner with IT Portfolio Leadership to identify opportunities while promoting reusable enterprise patterns and standards.
  • Evaluate Workday-native and enterprise capabilities for alignment with the Workday HCM architecture, broader Workday ecosystem, and enterprise technology strategy.

Roadmap Execution & Delivery

  • Evaluate approved Workday HCM roadmap items in partnership with the IT HCM Portfolio Lead, jointly assign work with the HCM Delivery Lead, and provide technical guidance while the HCM Delivery Lead oversees execution through completion.
  • Support portfolio demand and prioritization governance by assessing Workday HCM feasibility, dependencies, risks, effort, and technical sequencing.
  • Provide oversight of major Workday HCM initiatives, ensuring solution decisions account for user experience, business process, change, adoption, and broader people and organizational impacts, while empowering functional, technical, integration, analytics, and support leaders to manage execution.
  • Establish measures for Workday HCM platform health, delivery effectiveness, operational performance, and roadmap execution.
  • Provide Workday HCM technical recommendations to IT Portfolio Leadership regarding investment needs, resources, risks, dependencies, vendor performance, and strategic opportunities.

Governance, Risk & Controls

  • Establish and oversee technology governance and clear decision rights for Workday HCM solution design, security, integrations, data, releases, environments, changes, and production operations across HR, Finance, IT, Security, Architecture, Data and Analytics, delivery teams, and external partners.
  • Oversee Workday HCM platform technology risk, technical debt, architectural complexity, and lifecycle risks.
  • Ensure appropriate controls, documentation, and governance practices support audit readiness, regulatory requirements, and operational continuity.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 8+ years of relevant experience, or 12+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Deep Workday HCM expertise across platform capabilities, configuration, integrations, security, architecture, and operational considerations.
  • Experience serving as a platform solution lead or senior technical lead accountable for platform strategy and delivery outcomes.
  • Strong understanding of how Workday HCM architecture, lifecycle management, integrations, security, data, business processes, change management, and operational support fit together across the broader Workday ecosystem, with demonstrated ability to design for user experience and the people and organizational impacts of the system.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess complex technology decisions and communicate recommendations, risks, investment needs, and tradeoffs to senior and executive leadership.
  • Experience leading cross-functional work involving IT Delivery, Architecture, Security, Data, business stakeholders, vendors, and implementation partners.
