Iberdrola is a Spanish utility founded in 1901 that became one of the largest renewable energy operators in the world, having decided in the early 2000s to build wind and hydro capacity while most European utilities were still committed to fossil generation. It operates regulated electricity networks in Spain, the United Kingdom through ScottishPower, the United States through Avangrid and Brazil through Neoenergia, alongside a very large renewable generation fleet including offshore wind. Headquartered in Bilbao and listed in Madrid, it now earns the majority of profit from regulated networks rather than from selling power.

Create a better future, quicker!

At SP Energy Networks, we're investing billions to transform the electricity network that powers homes, businesses and communities across the UK. Within our Transmission business, a £12 billion investment programme is driving some of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects in our history, helping connect renewable energy, strengthen network resilience and support the transition to a cleaner, greener future.

From new substations and transmission network reinforcements to major capital delivery programmes across Scotland, our teams are building the infrastructure needed to meet growing energy demands and enable Net Zero ambitions.

To help deliver this unprecedented programme of work, we're investing in the next generation of construction leaders. We're looking for a passionate and experienced Construction Training Lead to develop future Site Managers, ensuring they have the skills, knowledge and confidence to safely lead complex infrastructure projects across our network.

This is a unique opportunity to combine your construction expertise with your passion for developing people, playing a key role in shaping the workforce that will deliver Scotland's energy future.

What You'll Be Doing

As Construction Training Lead, you'll take ownership of our Trainee Site Manager Development Programme, creating meaningful learning experiences that blend formal training, mentoring and hands-on site exposure.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and coordinating the delivery of the Trainee Site Manager Development Programme.
  • Creating and managing individual development plans, incorporating site placements, coaching, technical learning and professional qualifications.
  • Working closely with Construction Managers and project teams to provide varied learning experiences across major transmission projects, substations, overhead lines and cable schemes.
  • Coordinating mentors, coaches and placement managers to ensure trainees receive regular feedback and structured development opportunities.
  • Building strong relationships with professional bodies, learning providers and internal stakeholders to support recognised qualifications and industry best practice.
  • Monitoring trainee progress and programme milestones, providing support and interventions where required.
  • Visiting construction sites across Scotland to observe trainees, assess development and gather feedback.
  • Translating technical standards, lessons learned and business procedures into engaging, practical learning content.
  • Coordinating onboarding, core training and development activities to address capability gaps.
  • Maintaining programme records and reporting on progress, risks, completions and future workforce needs.
  • Continuously enhancing the programme to ensure it remains aligned to business requirements and future industry demands.

What You'll Bring

We're looking for someone who is passionate about developing others and has experience leading or supporting construction activities within a safety-critical environment.

You'll have:

  • Strong practical experience in site or construction management within electricity transmission, utilities, energy, rail, water or another major infrastructure sector.
  • A solid understanding of how large-scale construction projects are planned, delivered and safely supervised.
  • Knowledge of civil, electrical, cable, building or overhead line construction.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring or developing individuals in the workplace.
  • The ability to translate technical information into engaging and effective learning experiences.
  • Excellent organisational and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to influence, challenge and provide constructive feedback.
  • A sound understanding of health, safety, quality and environmental management within construction environments.
  • Knowledge of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
  • Experience using digital systems to monitor, measure and report on learning or programme performance.

Desirable Experience & Qualifications

  • Experience delivering trainee, apprenticeship, graduate or capability development programmes.
  • Experience working with professional bodies, colleges or training providers, particularly within construction management pathways.
  • A qualification in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • A recognised coaching, mentoring, teaching, assessing or learning and development qualification.
  • SMSTS qualification.
  • First Aid certification and/or relevant utility authorisations.

Minimum Criteria

  • Proven practical experience in site or construction management within a safety-critical infrastructure environment.
  • Demonstrable experience coaching, mentoring or developing people.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel regularly throughout Scotland.

This is an opportunity to directly influence the future capability of a business delivering some of the UK's most significant energy infrastructure projects. You'll help develop the next generation of Site Managers who will play a critical role in delivering a multi-billion-pound investment programme, connecting renewable energy, strengthening Scotland's electricity network and supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.
