ICON builds large-scale construction robots that three-dimensionally print house walls in concrete, using its Vulcan printer and the BuildOS software platform for design, construction planning and fleet management. The company has printed whole neighbourhoods in Texas and works with NASA on construction technology for the Moon. It is headquartered in Austin, Texas, United States.

ICON is seeking a Structural Applications Engineer II to enable customers, Structural Engineers of Record (SEORs), Design and Construction teams, many encountering ICON's system for the first time, to design and build with our technology confidently. This role uses structural engineering judgment for applied cases the validated product hasn't specifically addressed: new details, connections, anchorages, reinforcement approaches, and installation conditions ICON hasn't previously encountered, documented, or addressed in customer-facing resources. It determines whether a case is a structural engineering question, a gap in how a condition is represented in BuildOS, or a genuine software issue, and owns the first two directly: providing structural recommendations based on established work and teaching customers and partners how to apply them to their own projects, and configuring known-capability structural cases in BuildOS in collaboration with the Design Technologist, Applied Solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the structural engineering resource for applied cases the validated product hasn't specifically addressed: evaluate feasibility and provide recommendations for new details, connections, anchorages, reinforcement approaches, and attached-element anchor or embed selection, including confirming whether a given approach has been used before, based on engineering judgment and precedent.
  • Teach and onboard customers, SEORs, and design and construction teams, particularly those encountering ICON's system for the first time, how to apply structural recommendations to their own projects, building their working capability to design and build with the system confidently; partner with Customer Success on new-customer onboarding as needed.
  • Determine whether a structural condition is correctly represented in BuildOS, configuring known-capability cases directly and distinguishing a structural design gap from a software implementation issue; escalate genuine software issues to the Software team, remaining the structural point of contact through resolution.
  • Provide structural recommendations for field-surfaced and undocumented installation conditions that fall outside documented precedent, covering adjacent performance implications, with field execution remaining the customer's or contractor's responsibility.
  • Convert resolved, previously undocumented structural problems into entries in ICON's internal knowledge base so they are available for future applications, distinguishing reusable applied guidance from cases that reveal a genuine product gap requiring Product Development work; partner with Product Development to produce customer-facing documentation for new products and features, so customers can apply them independently once deployed.
  • Manage a caseload of concurrent structural applied requests across active projects and customers, sequencing by urgency and structural risk.
  • Track recurring structural application issues across customers and projects and route them to Product Development in a structured, evidence-based format when a pattern suggests a product gap rather than a one-off case.
  • Communicate structural findings, recommendations, and constraints clearly to internal stakeholders and external partners, adapting technical detail to the audience.
  • Provide technical input and support to ICON's business and partner relationships as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of related experience in structural engineering, reinforced concrete or precast connection design, or a closely related applied structural field, or equivalent demonstrated experience
  • Bachelor's degree in structural/civil engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent practical experience
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop or evaluate structural details, connections, anchorages, or reinforcement approaches for conditions without existing precedent
  • Demonstrated ability to read and apply structural engineering documentation (drawings, calculations, specifications) to real project conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and work within technical software platforms (e.g., BuildOS, Revit, CAD, or similar), even without prior experience on ICON's specific tools
  • Demonstrated ability to explain technical or design decisions to clients, contractors, or less experienced team members with varying levels of technical fluency, in a design, construction, or project delivery setting

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • PE license, or PE-eligible
  • Direct experience with digital fabrication, robotics, CNC, or additive manufacturing workflows
  • Experience with concrete, precast, tilt-up, or another systemized/manufactured building method
  • Direct experience working with a Structural Engineer of Record or in a design-build delivery environment
  • Familiarity with anchor and post-installed anchor design (e.g., ACI 318 Chapter 17) and building code application for non-standard structural conditions
  • Demonstrated experience training, onboarding, or teaching technical users, particularly those unfamiliar with a new tool, platform, or method
