Senior Scala Engineer

Intellias is partnering with a Fortune 100, Midwest-based industrial manufacturer to modernize and expand a suite of cloud-based services and data products used by a global network of dealers, enterprise customers, and internal business units.

Our teams deliver scalable APIs, event-driven platforms, analytics pipelines, and cloud-native solutions supporting quoting, ordering, asset telemetry, diagnostics, and lifecycle management for heavy equipment operating worldwide.

This position offers an opportunity to work on highly scalable distributed systems, modern cloud infrastructure, and data-intensive applications that directly impact thousands of users across global markets.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Scala

• Build distributed system components and event-processing services

• Develop highly available APIs and integrations

• Design and implement fault-tolerant, event-driven architectures

• Participate in architecture discussions and technical decision-making

• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues

• Ensure high-quality software through testing, automation, code reviews, and best practices

• Support integration, acceptance, and QA activities

• Mentor engineers and contribute to engineering excellence

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams in Agile environments

• Own services throughout their entire lifecycle, from design through production support

Requirements

Must Have

• 10+ years of software engineering experience

• 5+ years of commercial Scala experience

• 5+ years building distributed systems using Akka (Streams, Actors, HTTP, Persistence) or Apache Pekko

• 5+ years of AWS experience

• Hands-on experience designing and operating event-driven architectures

• Experience with Kafka, AWS Kinesis, or equivalent technologies

• Strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices

• Functional programming experience with:

  • Cats

  • Cats Effect

  • ZIO

• Experience with PostgreSQL and advanced SQL

• Docker experience

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (preferably GitHub Actions)

• Understanding of software architecture and solution design

• Strong ownership mindset and ability to independently drive technical initiatives

• Experience working in Agile environments

• Ability to provide overlap with US Central Time business hours (up to 2 PM CT)
