Itron Resiliency Solutions is an innovative business unit within Itron focused on solving mission critical problems for utilities through software and AI. Resiliency Solutions offers unique, market leading solutions for front-line worker safety, storm response, excavation damage prevention, construction management, and many more. These software and AI solutions solve end-to-end challenges for the utilities that power our society and are used by the largest and most complex organizations in the world such as National Grid, Southern Company, and Exelon.
Itron Resiliency Solutions is a global, diverse team of builders and innovators who tackle previously impossible challenges for our customers. If you have a desire to challenge yourself, solve impactful problems, and work with a passionate and talented team, this is the place.
The Emergency Preparedness & Response (EP&R) team builds the systems that keep critical operations running when it matters most. When storms and severe weather threaten communities and infrastructure across the US, our platform enables customers to rapidly procure, mobilize, and manage the workforce needed to respond to and recover from storm damage - often under tight timelines and high-stakes conditions. We are looking for a Principal Engineer who is deeply hands-on, works backward from customer pain points and business needs, and measures success by impact rather than lines of code shipped. You will be the technical anchor of the team: a backend-heavy full-stack engineer who knows our systems inside and out, reasons rigorously about trade-offs, and raises the engineering bar for everyone around you while leading the team toward outcomes that genuinely matter.
About the role
We're hiring a Software Engineer in Bengaluru to build and run production services. You'll own features end to end - from understanding the problem to shipping, monitoring and fixing what you built - with growing independence and support from senior engineers.
Our India engineering team is taking full ownership of core products and growing quickly, including a ground-up rebuild of a customer-critical service. You'll work closely with senior engineers, your Engineering Manager, Product and Customer Support.
What you'll own in your first year
- Own: Own features and services end to end with speed and quality - build, test, release, monitor, fix.
- Well-scoped problems, then bigger ones. Start with clearly defined work and grow into breaking down ambiguous problems yourself.
- Design. Write design notes for your features and get them reviewed; contribute to larger designs led by senior engineers.
- Quality. Write tests, add observability, and take part in on-call so issues are caught before customers see them.
- Customers. Understand who uses what you build, and learn from support issues what to fix next.
- Code reviews. Give and receive thoughtful reviews, and help onboard engineers who join after you.
What you must bring
These are the bar. We can't teach them on the job.
- Experience: 1-4 years building production software. We level on demonstrated scope, not years alone.
- You've shipped code that runs in production. Features or services you built, released and supported - not only coursework or prototypes.
- You are strong at problem solving. You can take an unfamiliar, feature-sized problem, reason through it, and land on a simple, correct solution.
- You work independently toward a clear goal. Given a clear goal, you figure out the steps, unblock yourself, and ask for help at the right moments.
We care how you engineer more than which language you did it in.
Technical background
You've built production software with a modern stack, such as:
- Cloud: hands-on with AWS - you've deployed and debugged services running on it.
- Languages: strong in at least one modern language such as Python, Java or JavaScript/TypeScript.
- Frameworks: modern service frameworks such as FastAPI, Node.js or equivalents.
- Databases: solid data modeling and query fundamentals - you can design a schema, use indexes well, and explain why a query is slow and how you'd fix it.
- Fundamentals: data structures, API design, and the basics of caching and concurrency.
Exact tools matter less than depth. Strong experience on an equivalent stack is welcome.
What sets great candidates apart
- Impact you can explain. You can say what changed because of something you built - for users, performance or reliability.
- One problem you went deep on. A bug, a performance issue or a design where you dug past the surface to understand why.
- Ownership beyond the ticket. You've fixed what you shipped when it broke, and improved it after release without being asked.
- Framework mindset: You notice repeated code and turn it into something reusable.
- Learning speed. You've picked up a new domain, codebase or technology quickly and delivered in it.
- Curiosity about the user. You've asked why a requirement exists, or suggested a simpler way to solve the user's problem.
What we look for in everyone we hire
Whatever the role, we hire for six things.
- Customer obsession. You care who uses what you build and whether it actually helped them.
- Impact over activity. You measure success by outcomes, not tickets closed or lines written.
- Honesty. You're specific about your own part in team work, raise problems early, and say what didn't work.
- Independence. You don't wait to be told every next step. You figure things out with little hand-holding. You will work with leaders who will partner with you in the journey.
- Passion. Not the word on a resume - the evidence: a side project, a technology you went deep on, something you built because you wanted to.
- Depth. At least one thing you've built or debugged that you can explain down to the internals and the tradeoffs.
