About the role

The Intern will support the IR Manager and consulting team with labour-law research, dispute preparation, disciplinary processes, employee-relations administration, policy work and accurate record-keeping, while developing practical workplace and legal skills under supervision.

Responsibilities:

Dispute Resolution Support

  • Assist the IR Manager with the preparation and administration of CCMA and Bargaining Council matters, including conciliations, arbitrations and in limine issues.
  • Assist with preparing case files, bundles, chronologies, notices, correspondence and draft procedural documents such as postponements, condonations, rescissions, joinders, substitutions and jurisdictional arguments, under supervision.
  • Conduct legal research and assist with the preparation of briefs, case summaries and supporting documents for Labour Court or review matters where required.
Disciplinary & Performance Management Support
  • Assist with drafting and organising documentation relating to misconduct, incapacity and poor work performance, including notices, charges, minutes, evidence bundles and outcome records.
  • Attend disciplinary enquiries, grievance meetings and other IR processes as an observer or administrative support person, and assist with note-taking and preparation under the direction of the IR Manager.
  • Assist with investigations, grievance procedures, incapacity processes and performance consultations, including collecting relevant information and maintaining accurate records.
Policy & Procedure Support
  • Conduct research and assist with the drafting, review and updating of labour related policies, procedures, templates and standard operating procedures.
  • Assist the IR Manager in monitoring compliance with labour legislation, workplace policies and client procedures, and flagging areas that require attention.
Union & Employee Relations Support
  • Assist with preparation for meetings between management, employees and organised labour, including agendas, minutes, supporting documents and followup actions.
  • Maintain professional communication with employees, management and union representatives under the guidance of the IR Manager.
  • Assist with research and administration relating to collective agreements, organisational rights, wage negotiations and other employee-relations matters.
  • Assist with coaching and information sessions for employees and supervisors where required.
  • Assist with the preparation and administration of warnings and related disciplinary records.
  • Support the company representative in disciplinary hearings and other internal proceedings, without independently representing the company unless specifically authorised and legally permissible.
Consultation & Labour-Law Research
  • Assist with the preparation and administration of consultation processes, including retrenchment and changes to terms and conditions, under the supervision of the IR Manager.
  • Research current labour legislation, case law, CCMA guidelines and Bargaining Council provisions, and prepare concise summaries for the IR Manager and consulting team.
  • Assist with weekly and monthly reporting on disciplinary hearings, warnings, disputes, consultations and other IR activities.
Administration & Record-Keeping
  • Maintain accurate, complete and up-to-date employee and matter files, ensuring that documents reflect the full HR and IR process followed.
  • File and organise IR documentation, including incident reports, investigation notes, charges, hearing records, correspondence, notices, evidence and research material.
  • Follow company SOP requirements for record storage, version control, confidentiality, document naming and accessibility.
  • Prepare and submit assigned weekly and monthly HR/IR reports and trackers within the required timelines.
Minimum Requirements

  • South African Unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 34.
  • Must not have participated on the YES programme before.
  • Matric.
  • Completed qualification in Human Resources Management or Human Resources, together with a Law degree (LLB or equivalent). Both HR and legal qualifications are required.
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with professional interpersonal conduct.
  • Good legal research, drafting and writing ability, with the capacity to prepare clear summaries and procedural documents.
  • Good computer literacy and ability to use electronic filing systems, Microsoft Office, document control and record-keeping tools.
  • Highly organised, accurate and attentive to detail, with the ability to manage several tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to work under pressure, accept supervision, respond to feedback and meet agreed timelines.
  • Professional, proactive and discreet, with a strict commitment to confidentiality and ethical conduct
  • Good analytical, problem-solving and research skills, with an interest in negotiation and dispute resolution.
  • Team player who is willing to learn, take initiative and support the IR Manager and wider consulting team.
