As an Automation Engineer at Lexington Medical, you will design the fixtures and specify the robotics and automation equipment that build a surgical stapler, then scale those processes as production volume grows. This is an entry-level role built for an engineer coming out of school, and the work is real from the start: the fixture you design gets installed on a line that is running, and you will be on the floor when it does. Manufacturing, engineering, and quality all work in the same building in Bedford, so the loop between designing something and finding out whether it worked is short.

About Lexington Medical

Lexington Medical designs and manufactures AEON™ surgical stapling technology at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. Our products are used in minimally invasive surgery, where precision, reliability, and quality matter every time. Because engineering, manufacturing, and quality work together under one roof, the people building and supporting our products are close to both the process and the decisions behind it.

About the Role

As an Automation Engineer at Lexington Medical, you will support the development, implementation, and scaling of the manufacturing processes that produce our AEON™ surgical stapling products. You will design fixturing and tooling in SolidWorks, help source and commission production equipment including robotics and automation cells, provide day-to-day engineering support on the floor, and use process data to find and fix the steps that limit quality or throughput. You will work alongside experienced manufacturing engineers who will hand you real projects early rather than have you shadow theirs, and you will learn how manufacturing works inside a regulated quality system as you go.

Responsibilities

  • Design semi-automated, automated, and manual fixturing and tooling for manufacturing operations, including both digital and physical tools.
  • Work with external vendors to source custom and off-the-shelf production equipment
  • Develop and implement manufacturing processes that scale as production volume grows.
  • Provide engineering support on the production floor, troubleshooting equipment, and process issues as they come up.
  • Write and maintain manufacturing work instructions and process documentation.
  • Train production personnel on new and revised processes, and support continuous improvement and quality projects.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline (Industrial, Manufacturing, or Computer).
  • No professional experience is required. This role is open to recent graduates, and internship, co-op, or project experience designing and building mechanical or electromechanical equipment is what we look for in its place.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD, with SolidWorks preferred.
  • Coursework or hands-on experience with production methods such as machining, injection molding, or assembly processes.
  • Coursework or hands-on experience working from electrical schematics and I/O lists to wire, terminate, and troubleshoot sensors, I/O blocks, and motor control hardware at the machine or panel level.
  • Willing to spend real time on a production floor, hands-on with equipment.
  • Exposure to robotics, automation, PLCs, or motion control is a plus.
  • An internship or co-op in medical device or another regulated manufacturing environment is a plus.

What Success Looks Like

  • In your first few months, you own a fixture or tooling project from concept through installation on the line.
  • By one year, you have worked as a member of a team launching a fully automated work cell, taking responsibility for the success of a subsystem.
  • You are able to familiarize yourself with processes, equipment, and mechanisms with which you have no prior experience. You can turn this familiarity into practical, right-sized solutions on and off the production floor.
