Manulife is a Canadian insurance and asset management group founded in Toronto in 1887, with the first Canadian prime minister as its founding president. It sells life and health insurance, annuities and retirement products in Canada, the United States under the John Hancock brand and across a dozen Asian markets, and runs Manulife Investment Management as a global asset manager for institutional and retail clients. Headquartered in Toronto and listed in Toronto, New York and Hong Kong, it earns a growing share of its profit in Asia and has been reducing its exposure to legacy long-term care liabilities through reinsurance transactions.

The Opportunity

The Actuarial Assistant Manager/Actuarial Manager, Actuarial Consulting Group delivers high-quality actuarial support for priority, short-term, and emerging business needs across MGS Actuarial. The role applies actuarial expertise across pricing, valuation, portfolio and asset modelling, financial analysis, risk assessment, forecasting, and business planning, translating complex requirements into accurate, practical, and timely outcomes.

Working within a flexible consulting model, the incumbent may be deployed to teams requiring specialized expertise, additional capacity, transition support, or temporary project leadership. Success requires sound actuarial judgment, learning agility, disciplined execution, and effective stakeholder partnership to quickly understand unfamiliar subject matter, coordinate work, deliver against defined objectives, and identify opportunities for sustainable process improvement.

Established in 2012, MGS Actuarial is a global center of excellence with more than 200 professionals supporting Valuation, Asset and Liability Modelling, Experience Analytics, Pricing, and other actuarial services. MGS Actuarial offers global career opportunities, a market-leading actuarial development program, job rotations, and a collaborative environment that supports professional growth.

Position Responsibilities:

Actuarial Consulting and Project Delivery

  • Deliver and coordinate actuarial analyses and project outputs across pricing, valuation, portfolio and asset modelling, risk assessment, forecasting, financial analysis, and business planning.
  • Translate business needs into clear analytical approaches, workplans, models, and deliverables aligned with agreed scope, quality standards, timelines, and governance requirements.
  • Apply sound actuarial judgment to analyze results, identify key drivers and risks, and develop practical recommendations that support business decisions.

Stakeholder Partnership and Flexible Deployment

  • Partner with actuarial, finance, risk, investment, technology, and business stakeholders to clarify requirements, align expectations, and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions.
  • Provide responsive support for urgent initiatives, peak-period demand, work transitions, temporary resource gaps, and other priority assignments across actuarial teams.
  • Communicate objectives, progress, findings, risks, dependencies, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

Quality, Governance, and Risk Management

  • Review assigned analyses, models, reconciliations, assumptions, methodologies, controls, and supporting evidence for accuracy, consistency, and compliance with applicable standards and governance requirements.
  • Maintain complete and current documentation and identify and escalate material data, methodology, model, control, quality, or delivery risks, supporting timely remediation.

Transition and Continuous Improvement

  • Support the transition and stabilization of new assignments through structured knowledge transfer, parallel execution, process documentation, readiness assessment, and effective handover.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve process efficiency, accuracy, control, and scalability through standardization, analytics, automation, and emerging technologies.

Team and Capability Support

  • Coordinate assigned work, review outputs, share knowledge and lessons learned, and provide constructive guidance to junior team members while contributing to a collaborative and accountable environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, or a related field.
  • At least five years of actuarial experience in insurance or financial services, including experience independently delivering actuarial analyses or coordinating project workstreams.
  • Significant progress toward an Associate designation from a recognized actuarial organization, such as the Society of Actuaries or the Actuarial Society of the Philippines.
  • Knowledge of actuarial disciplines such as pricing, valuation, modelling, financial reporting, experience analysis, risk management, or business planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply actuarial concepts and professional judgment to model, analyze, and explain actuarial and financial results.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and develop clear, practical recommendations.
  • Experience coordinating work, reviewing outputs, managing delivery risks, and providing guidance to junior team members.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and present technical matters clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple assignments, and deliver high-quality results with accuracy and attention to detail in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; experience with VBA, GGY AXIS, SQL, QlikView, Power BI, Python, or similar actuarial and analytical tools is an advantage.

When you join our team:

  • We’ll empower you to learn and grow the career you want.
  • We’ll recognize and support you in a flexible environment where well-being and inclusion are more than just words.
  • As part of our global team, we’ll support you in shaping the future you want to see.
