Metabase's BizOps & Finance team builds the systems keeping the company running smoothly behind the scenes. We cover a wide range of areas - finance and accounting, sales operations, legal operations, compliance, and account management - but we treat them all as flavors of operations. Whatever the task, we take a systems-driven approach - design it, build it, and run it (ideally, automatically). Our goal is to free the rest of the company to focus on building great software.

We're hiring an experienced Controller to own accounting and financial operations at Metabase. It's a broad startup controller role: you'll own core accounting and audit, along with tax, payments, and expense management. Today we run as a small, high-leverage team that delivers much of this through external firms - accountants and tax professionals - so your initial focus will be on managing those partners. Over time, there's scope to bring accounting in-house.

This is a role for someone who's an expert in their domain but comfortable in a fluid, ambiguous environment - and energized by building out our financial operations as well as running them.

Responsibilities

• General ledger & close - manage and review the month-end close (run today through external accountants); investigate and resolve discrepancies
• Audit - own the external auditor relationship; coordinate information requests internally; investigate and resolve issues that surface
• Tax - manage external tax accountants; handle direct execution like new-state registrations and payments
• Accounts payable & expenses - run the payment cycle; own and troubleshoot the corporate card / expense system
• Over time - lead implementation of new systems (ERP, rev rec, payments); potentially build an in-house close process

About You

• Seasoned accountant with an active CPA
• Expertise with US GAAP, SaaS revenue recognition, stock based compensation, multi-entity / international accounting
• Owned full-cycle month end close / quarter end close processes and managed audits end-to-end
• Prior experience in a startup and / or big 4 audit a plus
• Undergraduate qualification in accounting, finance, or a rigorous quantitative field
• Strong investigative skills - you spot when something is off and can reconstruct what happened
• High bar for accuracy, with exacting attention to detail and little tolerance for errors
• Strong organizational skills - you can keep multiple streams of work running in parallel
• Low ego attitude - you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in
