Software Development Engineer - 2

As an SDE-II (Backend), you will be responsible for designing, building, and scaling backend services that power Flowbiz products. You will work closely with Product, Engineering, and Leadership teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and maintainable systems. We are looking for engineers who go beyond API development and demonstrate strong ownership in system design, performance optimisation, database architecture, and distributed systems.

The candidate will have responsibilities across the following functions:

Backend Engineering:

• Design and develop scalable backend services and APIs.
• Build high-performance microservices handling large-scale traffic and data.
• Write clean, maintainable, and production-grade code.
• Ensure high availability, reliability, and fault tolerance of services.

System Design and Scalability:

• Design distributed systems capable of handling increasing workloads.
• Drive architectural decisions around scalability, resiliency, and maintainability.
• Participate in system design reviews and technical discussions.
• Optimise application performance and resource utilisation.

Data and Infrastructure:

• Design efficient database schemas and query strategies.
• Improve database performance through indexing, partitioning, and optimisation.
• Build caching strategies using Redis or similar technologies.
• Develop asynchronous processing systems using queues and event-driven architectures.

Ownership and Impact:

• Own features from design through deployment and monitoring.
• Analyse production issues and drive root-cause resolution.
• Continuously improve engineering standards and best practices.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the engineering culture.

Requirements:

• 3-5 years of software development experience.
• Experience working in product, SaaS, or startup environments.
• Strong backend engineering experience in production systems.
• Strong proficiency in at least one of: Java, Golang, Python.
• Hands-on experience with: REST APIs and backend services, distributed systems, Microservices architecture, SQL and NoSQL databases, Database design and optimisation, Redis or equivalent caching technologies, Kafka, RabbitMQ, or event-driven systems, Cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure), CI/CD and production deployments.

System Design:

• Experience designing scalable backend systems.
• Understanding of concurrency, multithreading, and asynchronous processing.
• Strong understanding of performance optimisation and reliability engineering.

Scale Exposure:

• Examples include: High request-per-second (RPS) systems, Large-scale user-facing applications, Distributed services handling millions of transactions, Data-intensive backend platforms
• Technical Depth: Experience with: Distributed systems, Event-driven architecture, Performance optimisation, Database tuning, Caching strategies, Infrastructure and reliability improvements.
• Ownership: Candidates should be able to clearly articulate: Problems they solved, Design decisions they made, Trade-offs considered, Business impact delivered
• Preferred Background: Experience from product engineering organisations such as Fintech, SaaS Platforms, Developer Tools, Workflow Automation, B2B Products, and Infrastructure Platforms.
