The Logistics Freight Auditor (full-time, temporary) is responsible for the secondary audit, validation, and analysis of New Era's freight invoices and spend across Parcel, LTL, Truckload, and Freight Forwarder accounts after invoices have been processed through our initial Freight Auditing Company. This role safeguards freight spends by confirming charges align with contracted rates, approved services, and shipment activity, and by recovering overbillings. The role also serves as New Era's freight analytics resource, turning audit and shipment data into dashboards, KPIs, and cost insights that drive mode and carrier optimization, reduce avoidable accessorial charges, and support budgeting and rate negotiations. Partnering closely with Transportation, Finance, Accounts Payable, Distribution, and our 3PL and carrier partners, the Freight Auditor delivers accurate cost visibility and supports continuous improvement of New Era's freight audit controls. This is estimated to be a six month temporary position with the following hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm.

The Logistics & Distribution team oversees four functional groups within New Era: Logistics, Distribution, Logistics Integration, and Trade Compliance. This team is responsible for managing all product movement from the time it leaves the factory until the time it is delivered to the end customer.

Responsibilities

  • Perform secondary (post-audit) review of freight invoices after initial processing and audit by New Era's primary Freight Auditing Company, across Parcel, LTL, Truckload (TL/FTL), and Freight Forwarder accounts
  • Validate invoiced charges against contracted rates, tariffs, fuel surcharge tables, accessorial schedules, minimum charges, and approved service levels for each carrier and provider
  • Audit mode-specific charges, including parcel address corrections, dimensional weight, and service guarantee failures; LTL freight class, NMFC, and reweigh/reclass inspections; TL detention, layover, stop-off, and TONU (truck ordered not used) charges; and Freight Forwarder origin/destination, demurrage, detention, chassis, and per diem fees
  • Identify, document, and dispute billing discrepancies, duplicate billings, and overcharges with carriers, forwarders, and the Freight Auditing Company; track disputes and recoveries through resolution
  • Serve as New Era's primary point of contact with the Freight Auditing Company on audit exceptions, invoice holds, rejected invoices, and audit rule/rate-table updates to strengthen first-pass audit accuracy
  • Verify that carrier contracts, rate agreements, and accessorial schedules loaded into the Freight Auditing Company's platform and internal systems are current and accurate; escalate gaps to the Manager, Logistics Transportation
  • Own freight data integrity by reconciling Freight Auditing Company audit and payment data to shipment data in SAP and the TMS. Confirming shipments are billed once and allocated to the correct cost center, channel (B2B/B2C), and GL code
  • Build, maintain, and distribute freight analytics dashboards and reports (e.g., Power BI, Excel) covering freight spend, audited savings and recoveries, dispute aging, accessorial trends, and Freight Auditing Company audit performance
  • Develop and track key freight KPIs, including cost per shipment, cost per unit, cost per pound, freight cost as a percentage of sales, accessorial spend as a percentage of total freight, and on-time performance by carrier and mode
  • Analyze freight spend by mode, carrier, lane, channel (B2B/B2C), customer, and facility to identify cost drivers, trends, and opportunities for mode optimization, carrier mix changes, and shipment consolidation
  • Perform root-cause analysis on avoidable accessorial and surcharge spend (e.g., address corrections, detention, reclasses) and partner with Distribution, 3PL partners, and Customer Relations to implement and measure corrective actions
  • Model the financial impact of carrier General Rate Increases (GRIs), fuel surcharge changes, contract renewals, and proposed routing or mode changes; support carrier and forwarder rate reviews and bid events with historical shipment and invoice data
  • Develop carrier and forwarder scorecards combining cost, billing accuracy, and service performance to support business reviews led by the Manager, Logistics Transportation
  • Partner with Finance and Accounts Payable on freight accruals, budget versus actual variance analysis, month-end close, and freight spend forecasting
  • Document and maintain freight audit and analytics SOPs, data definitions, and report logic; support continuous improvement of audit rules, controls, and reporting automation
  • Maintain organized audit records and supporting documentation (BOLs, PODs, rate confirmations, invoices) in accordance with company record retention requirements
  • Keep all sensitive matters confidential
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of freight billing practices across Parcel, LTL, TL, and international (ocean/air) modes, including freight classification and accessorial charges

  • Experience building dashboards and reports in Power BI, Tableau, or similar BI tools; working knowledge of SQL or other data query tools preferred
  • Experience extracting and analyzing data from SAP, TMS, and freight audit/payment platforms
  • Ability to read and interpret carrier contracts, rate tables, tariffs, and fuel surcharge schedules, and model rate and cost scenarios
