Job Description:
This recruitment will be used to fill 2 part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) student jobs for the College of Business at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Center for Advancing Financial Education (CAFE) seeks motivated students in Oregon State University's Financial Planning Option to serve as Personal Finance Educators.
In this role, students provide financial education through one-on-one appointments, workshops, presentations, community outreach, and financial wellness clinics while working alongside Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) professionals, faculty, staff, and community partners.
Personal Finance Educators receive ongoing training, mentorship, and professional development in financial planning, client communication, leadership, and public education. The position offers hands-on experience applying the financial planning process, supporting clients, facilitating educational programs, and expanding access to financial education across Oregon.
This hybrid role combines in-person and remote responsibilities, including client appointments, outreach, presentations, meetings, and administrative work. Educators are expected to demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, ethical conduct, and client-centered service. Appointments are expected to begin in Fall 2026 with onboarding and training.
Pay rate for this position is $16.55 per hour.
Position Duties
65% - Personal Finance Education & Client Services
Conduct one-on-one basic financial education appointments with students and community members under the guidance of CAFE professional staff
Educate clients using the basics of the financial planning process, financial education principles, and coaching techniques learned through coursework and CAFE training to support clients in fundamental areas including financial goal setting, budgeting, saving, investing, debt, credit, insurance, and student loan repayment
Prepare for and execute appointments by reviewing client information, documenting appointment notes, maintaining confidentiality, identifying appropriate campus and community resources, and making referrals when topics fall outside the scope of this role
Build trusting, respectful relationships with clients while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and empowering individuals to make informed financial decisions
Lead or co-facilitate financial wellness presentations and educational workshops for students, families, and community audiences
Attend weekly team meetings, case discussions, and collaborative debrief sessions to continuously improve client services and financial education skills
20% - Professional Training & Development
Complete an extensive onboarding and training program during the first academic term and continue participating in ongoing professional development throughout employment
Complete assigned online modules, certifications, readings, and applied learning activities related to financial planning, coaching, financial wellness, peer education, and inclusive coaching practices
Shadow experienced Personal Finance Educators, CAFE staff, and CFP® professionals before independently meeting with clients
Participate in coaching sessions, role-playing activities, reflective practice, case discussions, and individualized feedback meetings designed to strengthen client communication, critical thinking, and financial planning knowledge
Demonstrate continued growth in professionalism, ethical decision-making, financial planning knowledge, and client engagement
15% - Community Engagement & Program Support
Participate in community-based financial wellness clinics (dates, times, and locations to be determined)
Collaborate with CFP® professionals, Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) partners, Oregon State University Extension personnel, and CAFE staff to deliver presentations, workshops, and one-on-one financial education appointments during financial wellness clinics
Represent Oregon State University and CAFE professionally while serving students, families, and Oregon communities
Assist with outreach events, tabling, marketing initiatives, assessment activities, educational resource development, and special projects that expand CAFE's impact across campus and throughout Oregon

Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by theOffice of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Required
Must be academically enrolled and meet all OSU student employment eligibility requirements
Declared Financial Planning Option student within the Finance major
Successful completion of FIN 460: Principles of Financial Planning prior to employment (C- or better)
Interest in pursuing a career in financial planning or the broader financial services profession
Ability to commit to an extensive onboarding and training program during the first academic term
Ability to work a minimum of 12 hours per week during the academic year
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, sound judgment, and ethical decision-making
Ability to establish rapport while maintaining professional boundaries and client confidentiality
Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
Comfortable learning and utilizing Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace, and web-based software
Must have access to a reliable personal laptop capable of supporting virtual appointments, video conferencing, and other work responsibilities
Must have access to a private, professional, and distraction-free workspace with reliable internet to conduct confidential virtual appointments and meetings when working remotely
Must be available to participate in financial wellness clinics throughout the academic year (dates, times, and locations to be determined)
Additional Required Qualifications:
Completion of additional Financial Planning Option coursework
Experience working directly with individuals through customer service, peer education, mentoring, tutoring, coaching, advising, or volunteer service
Experience presenting to groups or facilitating educational workshop
Bilingual communication skills and ability to support students and families in other languages
Eligible for Federal Work Study
Interest in pursuing CFP® certification following graduation
Interest in community engagement, financial education, and public service

Working Conditions/Schedule:
- Domestic student employees may work up to 24 hours per week, depending on departmental needs and student availability. International may work up to 20 hours a week, depending on departmental needs and student availability.- A minimum commitment of 12 hours per week during the academic year is expected.
- This is a hybrid position. Work includes both in-person and remote responsibilities.
- In-person work occurs in the CAFE office, classrooms, presentation spaces, Financial Wellness Clinics, and other Oregon State University or community locations.
- Participation in community-based financial wellness clinics during the academic year is expected. Clinic dates, times, and locations will be communicated in advance and may require travel within Oregon.
- Student employees are expected to attend required weekly team meetings, professional development sessions, and ongoing training throughout the academic year.
