About the Role

Level: 4

Location: Remote with national travel

Department: Network - Distribution

Contract: Permanent

The Protection Business Development Manager is a specialist role within the Mortgage & Protection Relationship Management Team. The team works in partnership with firms and advisers to help them build stronger, more sustainable businesses that deliver positive customer outcomes. The Mortgage & Protection Relationship Management Team builds trusted partnerships with firms to create measurable impact. We combine commercial insight, constructive challenge, problem solving and collaboration to help firms build stronger, more sustainable businesses and deliver better customer outcomes.

Working collaboratively with Relationship Managers, firm principals, advisers, providers and colleagues across Quilter, you will identify opportunities to improve protection performance, adviser capability and the consistency and quality of protection conversations. You will use insight, data and your industry expertise to understand the underlying barriers to protection growth and develop focused interventions that create measurable and sustainable improvement.

You will design and deliver engaging development activity for defined adviser audiences, including workshops, webinars, campaigns, coaching and tailored firm support. Your focus will extend beyond delivering training to ensuring that learning is translated into changed adviser behaviour, improved customer outcomes and quality protection growth.

You will work with Relationship Managers to secure principal-level commitment, agree clear objectives and establish appropriate measures of success. You will take ownership of activity from initial diagnosis through to delivery, follow-up and evaluation, evidencing the difference your intervention has made.

The role will also contribute to the ongoing development of Quilter’s protection proposition. You will use adviser, firm and market insight to influence initiatives, technology, communications and support materials, working closely with Proposition, Supervision and Oversight, providers and other internal stakeholders.

You will share knowledge and best practice across the Relationship Management Team and wider Distribution function, building protection confidence and capability beyond your own activity. The role is primarily home-based, with travel required for firm meetings, events and development sessions.

Consumer Duty

This role will directly impact good customer outcomes by working closely with Network firms and Distribution teams to develop and strengthen skills and knowledge relating to protection advice, with a view to ensuring customers receive quality advice which adequately protects them and their future.

About You

You will bring strong experience of the mortgage and protection market, together with a genuine commitment to improving the quality and consistency of protection advice.

You will be comfortable working with firm principals and advisers, building credibility quickly and constructively challenging established thinking or behaviours where this will lead to stronger customer and business outcomes. You will be able to move conversations beyond product knowledge and help firms understand the commercial, customer and cultural factors that influence protection performance.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Strong knowledge of the UK protection market, including customer needs, advice considerations, products, underwriting and provider propositions.
  • Experience in protection business development, adviser development, sales management, training or a related role.
  • The ability to diagnose the underlying causes of performance or capability gaps and translate insight into focused action.
  • A consultative and coaching-led approach, with the confidence to challenge constructively and influence positive change.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills across face-to-face and virtual environments.
  • The ability to engage effectively at both principal and adviser level.
  • A commercial mindset, balanced with a clear commitment to advice quality, Consumer Duty and positive customer outcomes.
  • Experience of using management information, feedback and market insight to prioritise activity and measure impact.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage several interventions and stakeholder groups.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to connect firms with relevant expertise, solutions and colleagues across Quilter.
  • Personal ownership, resilience and the motivation to move situations forward rather than simply identify barriers.
  • The ability to maintain accurate records and provide clear evidence of activity, outcomes, emerging risks and agreed next steps.
  • A relevant mortgage or protection qualification, such as CeMAP, or the willingness to work towards an appropriate qualification.

Inclusion & Diversity

We value diversity and strive to promote inclusivity in all aspects of our culture. We believe in equal opportunities for all, ensuring that no applicant encounters less favourable treatment based on anything but their skills, qualifications, experience, and potential. We celebrate the unique contributions of a diverse workforce and create a respectful, nurturing environment where every colleague can thrive.

Stronger together: Combining our diverse talents, we accomplish more collectively than we ever could do alone. We speak openly, actively listen, and support each other, and constructively challenge and embrace new ideas. We seek empowerment and demonstrate ownership and trust, with the confidence to make impactful decisions.
