RMS Energy is a power system services company headquartered in Little Falls, Minnesota, that provides field testing and maintenance, transformer and substation services, isolated phase bus duct solutions and electrical engineering for the power grid. Founded in 2012, it works nationwide for utilities, industrial and commercial facilities, renewable energy projects, data centers and government sites, including transmission planning, interconnection and power system studies. It hires protection and control field engineers and technicians, transformer technicians, substation and electrical design engineers, power system studies engineers, welding inspectors and project managers.

We’re looking for a Principal Power System Studies Engineer to join our T&D Engineering and Consulting team. This remote role is ideal for senior-level professionals with strong experience in power systems modeling and analysis. You’ll lead studies, mentor others, and contribute to the development of best-in-class engineering solutions for clients across North America.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead complex studies in power flow, transient stability, short-circuit, electromagnetic transients (EMT), harmonics, and techno-economic areas for transmission, distribution, and generator applications
  • Develop and improve scripting processes to streamline modeling and study execution
  • Guide and support junior engineers, providing technical direction and ensuring deliverables are accurate, timely, and meet client requirements
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of industry standards, system operations, and equipment regulations to solve advanced modeling challenges
  • Manage sensitive technical and commercial information with high confidentiality and ensure compliance with all data agreements
  • Oversee project initiation and closeout processes, tracking scope, deliverables, and hours spent
  • Proactively identify risks related to timelines or budgets and escalate concerns in time for mitigation
  • Facilitate or attend meetings to align with stakeholders, troubleshoot project issues, and support planning efforts
  • Submit accurate and timely time entries to support project accounting and cost recognition
  • Communicate frequently with management about team needs, project goals, and any outstanding items

The Experience We’re Looking For:

  • 7-12 years of professional experience performing and leading power system studies
  • Proven experience managing and mentoring engineering teams
  • Advanced proficiency with industry-standard modeling tools (e.g., PSS/E, PSCAD, ASPEN, ETAP, PowerFactory)
  • Demonstrated ability to write high-quality reports and conduct technical presentations
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills; fluent in English for both written and verbal communication

Additional Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent field experience
  • Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Able to travel 25% or more, including periodic overnight stays
  • Must be flexible to work occasional overtime, weekends, or holidays based on project demands
  • Visa sponsorship available for qualified U.S.-based candidates

Bonus Points for:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent field experience
  • Engineer-in-Training status or PE license
  • Experience working with ISO/RTO study requirements or interconnection processes
  • Familiarity with scripting and automation in Python, MATLAB, or similar languages
  • Background in techno-economic analysis of power systems
  • Experience presenting to utility boards, regulatory bodies, or major industrial clients

**We welcome applications from qualified candidates, including those who may require visa sponsorship to work in the United States.**
