What’s the role
The Real-Time Market Data & Analytics Lead is a senior technical and business leadership role within the Market Data & Trading Tools capability, responsible for driving the adoption, optimisation, governance, and evolution of Shell Energy’s real-time market data and analytics capabilities.
Reporting to the Head of Market Data & Trading Tools within the Chief Data Office, the role will act as the senior authority for low-latency market data, ticker plants, market microstructure analytics, L1/L2/L3 data, time-series platforms, streaming architectures, and real-time data consumption across Front Office, Quantitative Analytics, Risk, Commercial Operations, and Trading Technology.
The role holder will work closely with trading desks, quants, execution teams, architects, engineers, technology teams, and vendors to ensure real-time market data is acquired, normalised, distributed, governed, analysed, and consumed effectively across the enterprise.
The role requires practical experience designing, building, operating, or optimising real-time market data platforms used by trading, execution, market making, or quantitative teams within commodities trading firms, investment banks, exchanges, brokers, execution services, or market data vendors.
Success will be measured through improved platform adoption, performance, reliability, data quality, governance, operational efficiency, analytical capability, and business value delivered to traders, quants, and commercial stakeholders.
What you’ll be doing
1. Strategy Execution & Capability Enablement
Partner with the Head of Market Data & Trading Tools to execute the real-time market data and analytics strategy across Shell Energy Trading.
Translate strategic objectives into scalable capabilities, implementation roadmaps, standards, and measurable business outcomes.
Drive adoption of enterprise real-time market data platforms, analytics services, and common operating standards.
Continuously assess the real-time market data ecosystem to identify opportunities to improve performance, scalability, resilience, automation, reuse, and business value.
2. Market Data Acquisition, Connectivity & Distribution
Provide technical leadership for low-latency market data acquisition, distribution, and integration architectures.
Support integration of market data from exchanges, brokers, ECNs, trading venues, OTC markets, and strategic market data vendors.
Drive adoption of standard FIX connectivity, feed handler patterns, real-time integration models, and enterprise distribution standards.
Improve accessibility, consistency, reliability, and reuse of real-time market data across downstream trading, risk, analytics, and operational platforms.
Support consumption across ETRM, Front Office, and Quantitative platforms, including Align, Endur, pricing, execution, trading analytics, risk management, decision-support, tick data, modelling, forecasting, and research workflows.
3. Market Microstructure, Order Book Analytics & Quantitative Support
Provide subject matter expertise across L1, L2, and L3 market data modelling, order book construction, market depth analytics, trade reconstruction, and order flow analysis.
Enable storage, replay, reconstruction, and analysis of order book and tick-level data for quantitative research, execution analytics, and trading strategy development.
Support advanced analytics including Transaction Cost Analysis, market impact modelling, queue position analysis, liquidity analytics, signal generation, back-testing, and execution optimisation.
Partner with Front Office, Quants, execution teams, and risk stakeholders to improve insight into liquidity dynamics, market behaviour, execution quality, and trading performance.
4. Time-Series Platforms, Streaming Architecture & Engineering
Act as the technical authority for enterprise time-series platforms, tick-data analytics, streaming architectures, ticker plants, and low-latency data technologies.
Support adoption and optimisation of platforms such as KDB+/q, QuestDB, OneTick, InfluxDB, TimeBase, Bloomberg B-PIPE, Refinitiv RMDS/TREP, Kafka, Solace, Ultra Messaging, and equivalent technologies.
Drive automation of feed onboarding, monitoring, reconciliation, entitlement management, operational support, and data quality controls.
Promote API-first, event-driven, cloud-native, observable, scalable, and resilient architecture patterns across real-time market data platforms.
Support high-performance platforms for tick data storage, market replay, order book reconstruction, quantitative analytics, and future machine learning use cases.
5. Governance, Controls, Vendor & Stakeholder Engagement
Champion data quality, lineage, monitoring, entitlement management, ownership, governance, and operational controls across real-time market data services.
Act as a senior technical point of contact for market data vendors, exchanges, brokers, ECNs, and technology providers.
Support vendor evaluations, proof-of-concepts, technical due diligence, and awareness of market structure and electronic trading developments.
Act as a trusted advisor to Front Office, Quants, Risk, Technology, CDO, and Commercial stakeholders.
Translate commercial requirements into platform enhancements, analytical capabilities, and technical priorities.
What you bring
Proven experience in commodities trading, investment banking, electronic market making, broker-dealer, exchange, execution services, market data vendor, or electronic trading environments.
Proven experience building, operating, implementing, optimising, or architecting ticker plant and real-time market data platforms.
Strong understanding of low-latency market data architectures, direct exchange connectivity, broker/ECN connectivity, exchange feed structures, feed handlers, vendor-managed infrastructure, and real-time distribution technologies.
Strong understanding of FIX protocol, market data connectivity, session management, order flow integration, symbology management, normalisation, enrichment, caching, and historical persistence.
Deep understanding of L1, L2, and L3 market data structures, market microstructure, venue-specific data models, order book modelling, market depth analytics, order flow analysis, liquidity analytics, trade reconstruction, and execution performance measurement.
Strong proficiency in real-time market data and time-series technologies such as Bloomberg B-PIPE, Refinitiv RMDS/TREP, Kafka, Solace, Ultra Messaging, KDB+/q, QuestDB, OneTick, InfluxDB, TimeBase, or equivalent platforms, with the ability to partner with technology teams to shape architecture and drive enterprise adoption.
Proficiency across Python, q/KDB, SQL, Spark, C#, and related engineering toolsets, with sufficient depth to guide technical decisions, challenge design options, and work effectively with engineering teams to deliver scalable market data solutions.
Experience designing analytical solutions on large-scale real-time and historical market datasets, including TCA, market impact modelling, signal generation, back-testing, and trading performance analytics.
Strong understanding of cloud-native data platforms and hybrid architectures, including Azure, AWS, Databricks, Snowflake, and modern real-time analytics platforms.
Experience working directly with traders, execution teams, quantitative analysts, market risk teams, engineering teams, and market data vendors.
Excellent stakeholder management, communication, influencing, and technical leadership skills.
Preferably with Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or related discipline.
Nice to Have
Experience integrating real-time market data into Align, Endur, and Front Office trading platforms.
Familiarity with Flink, Spark Streaming, and modern stream-processing technologies.
Knowledge of execution algorithms, quantitative trading strategies, and best execution frameworks.
Experience with MDSL, TRG Screen, DACS, or other market data inventory and entitlement platforms.
Experience supporting enterprise-wide market data transformation programmes.
