Smiths Group is a British engineering company founded in 1851 as a London watchmaker, and it has repeatedly reinvented itself, once supplying instruments for most British cars and aircraft before selling those businesses entirely. Today it operates in four areas: security screening equipment for airports and borders, seals and connectors for extreme industrial environments, non-destructive detection and inspection instruments, and specialist electrical connectors for aerospace and defence. Headquartered in London and listed there, it has been under investor pressure to break itself up on the argument that its divisions have little in common.

Our technology provides threat detection and screening solutions for customers in our key markets: aviation, ports and borders, defence, and urban security.

Our expertise spans 21 global offices, seven manufacturing sites and five R&D centres, with a global network of 3,000 dedicated colleagues contributing towards over 40 years at the frontline of advances in safety and security.

This results in careers built on variety and the opportunity to work on a range of state-of-the-art solutions, where you can develop your knowledge and experience every day.

The primary goal of this role is to create insight, balance, and optimization within the resource pool through effective coordination, planning, and allocation of resources. This enables accurate prioritization and informed decision-making by management.

The position is responsible for planning and managing Technology personnel resources across all projects and work efforts globally. By implementing robust capacity planning and proactive resource identification and allocation, the role aims to increase the likelihood of meeting project schedules and budgets, while minimizing the impact of potential delays.

This is achieved by ensuring that resource demand is consistently aligned with the right quantity, quality, and expertise of available resources, ultimately supporting the successful delivery of all Technology projects and work packages.

Your responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross functional teams (Centre of Excellence (CoE / manufacturing facility) and the Regions, Markets, contract/client, affiliates and partners where applicable) to support the efficient and effective delivery of products across relevant sites;
  • Work closely with Technology Department Heads to assess and define both short- and long-term personnel resource requirements;
  • Coordinate with Program Teams to ensure that up-to-date project progress and milestones are accurately reflected in overall resource planning;
  • Provide accurate short- to medium-term resource availability data to support the evaluation and acceptance of new work within the Technology department;
  • Assign teams and personnel, down to the developer/engineer level, across project-level, work package-level, and individual task-level to help the Project Manager and Project Engineering Coordinator meet key milestones and deadlines;
  • Identify potential bottlenecks, conflicts, or resource overloads (e.g., competing resource demands across multiple projects), and proactively address these issues in collaboration with Department Heads and Project Leads;
  • Propose and implement solutions to optimize resource allocation across multiple projects, ensuring alignment with critical path requirements and overall priorities.
  • Coordinate personnel resources and match supply with demand for various projects and work packages on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis;
  • Maintain an up-to-date, accessible resource management tool that provides visibility across the management team and stakeholders for data-driven decision-making.
  • Monitor technical skillsets and capabilities within the Technology department, identifying and reporting potential resource gaps to management;
  • Drive continuous improvement of tools and processes for labour forecasting and resource allocation;
  • Act as the Technology coordinator for the provision and management of contractor personnel.
  • Provide accurate reporting on personnel levels in relation to current and future requirements, ensuring alignment with Performance Indicators and thresholds;
  • Assist Project Managers with identifying labour underspends or overspends, recommending corrective actions to stay on schedule and within budget;
  • Oversee the Earned Value Management (EVM) process ensuring accurate monitoring and reporting of Technology programs and projects.
  • Proven, relevant experience in resource planning, capacity management, or project control, preferably within a technical or project-driven environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Business Administration, Project Management, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret and manage complex planning data and translate insights into actionable solutions.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel (advanced formulas, pivot tables, data analysis); experience with resource management or planning tools is an advantage.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across multiple departments and stakeholder levels.
  • Proactive, structured, and detail-oriented approach, with strong organizational and prioritization abilities.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and maintain oversight in a dynamic, international environment.

What we offer:

  • A full-time position in a dynamic, international environment with colleagues from around the world;
  • An attractive salary based on experience and knowledge;
  • Opportunities for training and professional development, supporting both personal growth and career advancement.
  • A range of additional benefits, including fresh fruit at the office, a bicycle lease scheme, a performance-based bonus package, corporate fitness program, commuting allowance, and a home working allowance.
