Forward Deployed Engineer - San Francisco
San Francisco, CA, United States · Permanent · On-site
Compensation: $170,000 to $250,000 USD base, plus 0.08% to 0.15% equity
Be the engineer the biggest customers call first at a fast-growing security startup, fixing their issues in hours and turning what you hear into the next features.
What you'd actually work on
- Being the main technical contact for the company's largest accounts, taking in every question, bug report and feature request
- Shipping bug fixes and product improvements quickly while working closely with high-value customers
- Sitting with the engineering team to understand the detection logic, the product backend and its real constraints, so you can speak to customers with credibility
- Leading early product discovery for new features based on real customer problems, then building those improvements back into the codebase
- Representing the product's technical capabilities externally, including demos and trade shows, together with the go-to-market team
- Working directly with the founding team, with no layer of hierarchy between you and the people making decisions
Where it gets technically interesting
- An identity threat detection and response product protecting more than 2.5 million users across over 10,000 businesses, where every bug touches someone's security
- A role that sits between code and customers: you need to understand detection engineering deeply enough to explain what the product can and cannot do, and then change it
- Fast feedback loops, where a problem raised by a customer in the morning can be fixed and shipped the same day
- A company scaling quickly, so the processes and tooling you build for customer-facing engineering will shape how the function works as it grows
- A modern stack (Node.js, TypeScript, React, Python) and a small, very senior team, which means real ownership from day one
What we're looking for
- 2 to 5 years as a forward deployed engineer, or as a software engineer at an early-stage company with direct customer interaction
- Experience in a customer-facing engineering team with a high bar, or as a founder or early engineer at a startup who built products from scratch for clients
- A computer science or closely related technical degree
- Strong hands-on coding in TypeScript, React or Python, and the ability to write and ship production code
- Clear, confident communication with customers, and comfort working across engineering and go-to-market teams
- The habit of finding problems and shipping solutions without waiting for direction, including when the scope is unclear
- Availability for up to 25% travel (trade shows, time on site with customers) and authorization to work in the US without visa sponsorship
- Fluent English
- Bonus: experienced engineers who want to return to a hands-on individual contributor role are welcome
The company
A Y Combinator-backed cybersecurity startup that reached mid-seven-figure annual revenue in under a year and is scaling toward more than $30M in the next twelve months. It wins the large majority of head-to-head evaluations against competitors and has very low churn. The founders come from leading security and finance companies, and the early team includes engineers and quantitative researchers from top-tier firms. This role comes with a path toward leading the function over time. Healthcare, dental, vision, 401(k), daily lunch and dinner, commuting stipend, gym discount and relocation support.
