Role Summary / Purpose:
The Advance Lead Engineer - Controls Simulation will lead the development and validation of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation solutions for locomotive control systems. This role involves developing physics-based plant models for traction, auxiliary power, engine, train control, and trip optimizer functions using MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape, and Stateflow, supporting real-time code generation and deployment, executing verification and validation activities, and analysing test results. The role also includes supporting HIL simulator integration, maintenance, and continuous improvement in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams.
Functional Responsibility:
Lead the development, integration, and validation of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation solutions for control system verification and validation.
Collaborate with systems, controls, and subsystem teams to define simulation requirements and develop physics-based plant models using MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape, and Stateflow.
Develop and maintain MIL/SIL workflows, test harnesses, and automated verification environments.
Generate and integrate real-time code using auto-code generation tools and support deployment on HIL platforms.
Develop and maintain MATLAB and Python automation scripts for testing, data analysis, and process improvement.
Configure, integrate, and support HIL platforms such as Concurrent Real-Time, OPAL-RT, and NI PXI.
Support system integration, debugging, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis in real-time test environments.
Manage simulation models, software assets, and test artifacts using Git/GitLab configuration management practices.
Participate in model, code, and design reviews, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and project requirements.
Prepare technical documentation, test reports, and engineering deliverables, and communicate project status, risks, and key technical updates to stakeholders.
Qualification / Essential Requirement:
Bachelor’s/master’s degree in electrical engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Science, Power Systems, Control Systems, Control & Instrumentation Engineering, Control and Computing, or a related engineering discipline.
Minimum 8+ years of experience in real-time embedded systems and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) design, development, integration, and validation.
Hands-on experience with COTS HIL platforms such as Concurrent Real-Time, OPAL-RT, NI PXI, or equivalent real-time simulation systems.
Strong expertise in MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, and Stateflow for plant modelling, control system development, simulation, and validation.
Experience in developing physics-based models of engines, traction motors, alternators, generators, power electronics, battery systems, and related electromechanical systems.
Strong experience with Model-Based Design (MBD) methodologies, including MIL/SIL workflows, test harness development, automated testing, and model verification & validation.
Good understanding of RT Linux, QNX, or other real-time operating systems.
Minimum 3 years of experience with LabVIEW for test automation, data acquisition, instrumentation, and GUI development.
Experience using Git/GitLab for source code management, configuration control, issue tracking, and collaborative development.
Strong understanding of electrical and embedded control systems, including the ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and system architecture documents.
Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, RS-232/RS-485, and ARCNET.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Desired Experience:
Experience delivering complete HIL solutions from requirements definition through integration, verification, validation, and commissioning.
Proficiency in Python and MATLAB scripting for automation, test execution, tool development, and data analysis.
Experience developing automated test frameworks, regression test environments, and verification workflows.
Knowledge of sensor and actuator simulation, DAQ systems, signal conditioning, and fault injection techniques.
Familiarity with software development best practices, including configuration management, defect tracking, and continuous integration.
Working knowledge of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Hybrid Heavy Equipment Vehicles (HHEV), or hybrid propulsion systems, including battery systems, BMS, traction drives, power electronics, and energy management strategies.
Experience modelling, simulating, or validating electrified propulsion systems using MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape, and Stateflow.
System-level understanding of locomotive propulsion, control, auxiliary, and diagnostic systems.
Demonstrated technical leadership, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional engineering teams.
