Qualification Requirements for a Purchaser

For a soft drinks manufacturing company in Ethiopia, the following qualifications are recommended when recruiting a Purchaser / Purchasing Officer.

Main Responsibilities

The purchaser will be responsible for:

1. Purchasing materials according to approved purchase requests.
2. Obtaining and comparing quotations from different suppliers.
3. Negotiating prices, payment terms, and delivery schedules.
4. Ensuring the timely availability of raw materials and packaging materials.
5. Maintaining supplier records and purchasing documents.
6. Coordinating with production, warehouse, maintenance, and finance departments.
7. Monitoring purchase costs and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
8. Ensuring that purchased materials meet the required quality standards.
9. Following company purchasing policies and approval procedures.

Requirements

Educational Qualification

• Bachelor's degree in Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Purchasing and Supplies Management, Logistics Management, or Business Administration.
• A diploma in Purchasing and Supplies Management may be considered for a junior position.
• Additional professional certification in procurement is an advantage

Work Experience

• Minimum: 3 years of relevant purchasing or procurement experience.
• Experience in a manufacturing company, preferably in the beverage, food, or FMCG industry.
• Experience purchasing raw materials, packaging materials, spare parts, and factory consumables.
• Experience working with local and international suppliers.

Technical Skills

The candidate should have:

• Strong supplier sourcing and evaluation skills.
• Excellent price negotiation and cost-control skills.
• Knowledge of purchasing procedures and inventory management.
• Ability to prepare purchase orders and compare supplier quotations.
• Knowledge of import purchasing procedures and documentation.
• Good computer skills, particularly Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Experience using ERP or inventory management software is an advantage.
