Overview
01.AI is a Chinese artificial intelligence company founded in Beijing in 2023 by Kai-Fu Lee, the former head of Google China and a prominent technology investor. It built the Yi family of bilingual large language models, releasing several with open weights, and reached a billion dollar valuation within eight months of being founded. Since 2024 the company has moved away from competing on frontier pre-training and concentrated instead on enterprise applications and smaller efficient models, packaging Yi into productivity, retail and industry-specific products for Chinese and international customers.

Kai-Fu Lee stopped building AI models and started selling enterprise data infrastructure. Now 01.ai is heading for a Hong Kong IPO.
Lee conceded the model race after DeepSeek. 01.ai now fine-tunes open-weight models and wraps them in data software for enterprises. Half of its business is outside China.
