Overview
Epic Games is an American video game and software company founded in 1991 that owns both Fortnite, one of the most played games in the world, and Unreal Engine, the real-time three-dimensional engine licensed to other studios and increasingly to film, architecture and automotive industries. It also operates the Epic Games Store, launched in 2018 with a lower commission than Steam, and it has pursued a long legal campaign against Apple and Google over app store fees. Headquartered in Cary, North Carolina and part-owned by Tencent, it is privately held and has acquired studios and tool companies including Psyonix, Quixel and 3Lateral.
Products
Epic Online Services
Free cross-platform matchmaking, accounts, achievements and voice services offered to any developer. Giving them away removes a reason for studios to depend on a platform holder's own online infrastructure, which is consistent with the company's wider argument about platform control.
epicgames.com
MetaHuman
Tools for creating and animating photorealistic digital humans, built partly on the 3Lateral acquisition. It solves the hardest and most expensive part of character production for studios that could never afford bespoke facial rigs.
epicgames.com
Epic Games Store
A digital storefront launched with a substantially lower commission than the incumbent. It is the commercial expression of the company's argument about platform fees, and it has been subsidised heavily to build an audience.

Unreal Engine
The real-time three-dimensional engine licensed to game studios and, increasingly, to film production, architecture and vehicle design. Royalty terms are deliberately generous to small developers, which builds the ecosystem that makes the engine the default choice.
epicgames.com
Fortnite
A free-to-play battle royale that became a cultural event and now operates as a platform for user-created experiences and live concerts. Its economics fund almost everything else the company does, which is also the greatest single concentration risk in the business.
