Overview

Toyota is a Japanese carmaker founded in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda as a spin-off from his father's loom works, and it has been the largest vehicle manufacturer in the world by volume for most of the past two decades. Its production system, built on just-in-time supply and continuous improvement, became the template studied by manufacturers in every industry. The company took an early and long-held bet on hybrid powertrains with the Prius, sells the premium Lexus brand, is pursuing hydrogen fuel cells alongside battery electric vehicles, and is building the Woven City test environment near Mount Fuji to trial connected mobility technology.
