About The Role

This is a new role for us. Until now, every engineer has reported to the Head of Engineering. As the team grows, that no longer gives people the attention they deserve. You'll line-manage a group of our engineers, across software, machine learning and other disciplines, and report to the Head of Engineering.

The role is about people. You'll coach and mentor engineers, help them grow, hire well, and make sure everyone knows where they stand. Teams own their delivery and our Product Engineers set technical direction, so your time goes on the people rather than the code.

How we measure performance matters to us. We don't track hours in Jira, and we don't count lines of code. We care about the value teams deliver. You'll design that framework with the Head of Engineering and run it.

Responsibilities

• Running regular 1-1s with every engineer who reports to you: development conversations with documented goals, so everyone knows where they stand
• Coaching and mentoring engineers on their growth, working practices and careers
• Setting and running the progression framework, and making promotion cases that are documented and defensible
• Designing a performance framework with the Head of Engineering that measures value delivered, and assessing every engineer against it
• Raising underperformance early, directly and on record, and running formal processes with HR when it comes to that
• Setting probation targets for new engineers and deciding the outcomes
• Running hiring for your engineers end to end, to a consistent standard
• Building an onboarding programme, with a 90-day check-in for every new engineer
• Watching morale and how people work together, and acting on flight risks before they become resignations
• Working with the teams to standardise how they measure DORA metrics, since each team has built its own

Our Tech Stack

You won't be writing code yourself, but you'll want to understand the work well enough to be credible with the people doing it. Our systems are increasingly event-driven and serverless: AWS Lambda, events and S3, built and deployed with SST. React for frontends, and some older services on more traditional JavaScript and TypeScript. Some products run as SaaS, others on site at airports or on edge devices. Teams measure delivery with DORA metrics.
