Amentum is a US government and critical infrastructure services contractor headquartered in Chantilly, Virginia, providing engineering, technical, mission support and operations services in defense, intelligence, space, energy and environment markets. It has about 50,000 employees in more than 70 countries, is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and absorbed PAE in 2022 before combining with the Jacobs critical mission solutions business in 2024. Openings include aerospace, GN&C and reliability engineers, aircraft workers, database administrators, software engineers, biometric enrollment specialists and paralegals.

If you want to be part of a dynamic team delivering cutting-edge cyber training solutions, this is the place for you. Amentum is seeking a Software Engineer to join the DevOps team in Hanover, MD. The team develops, deploys, and supports mission-focused cyber training solutions used across multiple locations.

Team members work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment supporting the entire software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, software development, testing, deployment, infrastructure management, and operational support. Engineers work closely with instructors, developers, and system administrators to deliver reliable, realistic training capabilities.

Unlike many software organizations where engineers are assigned to a single product or technology stack, members of the DevOps team contribute across a diverse portfolio of applications, services, and supporting infrastructure. This provides opportunities to build broad technical expertise while collaborating with teammates to deliver integrated solutions throughout the software development lifecycle.

This position is ideal for software engineers who enjoy solving complex technical challenges, learning new technologies, and applying their skills across a diverse portfolio of software, infrastructure, and operational systems.

Work Schedule: The courses supported by this team operate from 0700-1800 Monday through Friday. Contract core hours are 1000-1400. The DevOps team maintains flexible schedules; however, occasional support outside normal hours may be required for testing, maintenance, and operational activities.

Essential Responsibilities: The Software Engineer contributes to the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of software applications and supporting infrastructure. Software Engineer 3 personnel apply technical expertise and institutional knowledge to guide implementation decisions, mentor engineers, and improve the team's applications and operational environment. Team members are expected to develop expertise across multiple areas of the software development lifecycle while contributing their strengths in specific technical domains.

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyze complex mission requirements and evaluate the impact of proposed changes across applications, services, deployment pipelines, and operational environments to recommend and implement software solutions that balance mission needs, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Review software designs, architecture, and code to ensure maintainability, scalability, and adherence to engineering best practices.
  • Design, develop, deploy, and maintain user interfaces, backend services, APIs, databases, automation tools, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Design, implement, maintain, and continuously improve software development and deployment pipelines.
  • Provide technical leadership for the creation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of realistic cyber training environments and the software and infrastructure that support them.
  • Perform software testing, debugging, validation, and analysis of results.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, development methodologies, and engineering practices, recommending adoption where they provide measurable benefit to the team or mission.
  • Collaborate with instructors, developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to document solutions, improve workflows, and enhance training capabilities.
  • Share technical knowledge through collaboration, design discussions, code reviews, and mentoring of less experienced engineers.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands: The DevOps team works in a SCIF air-gapped environment at a contractor site.
